Panthers hire Josh McCown as QB coach
Jay Roosevelt replied to TheSpecialJuan's topic in Carolina Panthers
Interesting... -
I don't get the obsession with McCaffrey. He's not a Panther anymore, therefore he's just another player on another team. He was good for us, but he's not Cam Newton, Steve Smith, Luke Kuechly, Thomas Davis, Sam Mills, etc.

This. I distinctly remember reading several articles last fall about Stroud's leadership qualities. Now all of a sudden he's "aloof" and "not a leader."
-
Said all along, I'm all for going all-in to trade up for Stroud OR Young. Levis and Richardson should be fall-back options.

Do we get a 3rd round pick?

Panthers Request Interview w/ Evero for DC
Jay Roosevelt replied to Bear Hands's topic in Carolina Panthers
Surely he views our defense as better equipped talent-wise if his goal is to get a head coaching job. -

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go put some water in Sean Payton's mama's dish. -
His age bothers me more than his performance, TBH. But I trust Reich to develop him if he's the guy.

PFF Top 100 Free Agents and their projected contract
Jay Roosevelt replied to Captain Morgan's topic in Carolina Panthers
I'd love to have Jessie Bates, but no safety is worth $75M outside of Ed Reed in his prime. That said, his teammate Vonn Bell is also a very good player who would come a lot cheaper. I'd love to see us go after him. -

If that's all it'll cost to sign Mike Gesicki then sign me up. -
I feel very strongly about this... Derek Carr.
Jay Roosevelt replied to TylerDurden's topic in Carolina Panthers
Carr is certainly MUCH better than any of the scraps we've acquired over the past 3-4 years. That said, I still prefer to finally address QB early in the draft. But I wouldn't be upset if we signed Carr, just a little disappointed. -

THE ATHLETIC: Potential cap casualties….
Jay Roosevelt replied to WarPanthers89's topic in Carolina Panthers
Shaq is an interesting call. There's no way we can keep him at that cap number but if we cut him we're going to owe him $11M in dead money anyway and I don't see any way we're going to find a replacement in free agency for much less than the difference. I'd say the ideal situation would be to extend him on a 3-4 year deal that spreads the cap hit out a little over the life of the contract. Reduce this year's cap hit while locking up a key starter and leader on defense. But we'll see. -
Cam dominated the SEC at Auburn.

The board just didn't fall that way. Both Mayer and Washington were off the board by the time I picked in the 2nd and the value just wasn't there in the later rounds compared to who I ended up taking.

Panthers hard after the Cooter. -
Sell me Justin Fields vs CJ Stroud
Jay Roosevelt replied to Cam's New Arm's topic in Carolina Panthers
Totally different QBs. Fields is more athletic, but Stroud is light years ahead of him as a pocket passer. Similar arms, but Stroud's accuracy is what sets him apart from Fields and from the other QBs in the 2023 class. The floor is quite a bit higher with Stroud than it was with Fields. -
What would you give the bears for #1 pick
Jay Roosevelt replied to Jmac's topic in Carolina Panthers
2023: 1st + 2nd (SF) + 3rd (SF) 2024: 1st + 3rd 2025: 1st -
Which is why I think we should move up to #3 first, then trade up to #1 or #2 from there.
-
Trading up to #3 isn't going to be enough. We need to move all the way up to #1 to ensure we have our pick of QBs. The Texans are sitting pretty at #2; they're guaranteed Young or Stroud. The Colts are going to be gunning for #1 and have a higher pick than us to begin with. That's our primary competition. It's a given then that this year's 1st + 2024's 1st are going to be part of any trade; likely 2025's 1st as well. Beyond that we may need to give them our late 2nd this year and possibly our 3rd as well. That's a LOT to give up, but I think it's necessary. At this point we're stuck in no man's land without a QB to the point that nothing else really matters until we find our guy. If Tepper/Fitterer we're willing to give up the farm for damaged goods in Deshaun Watson then surely they're willing to give up a similar deal to secure a young franchise QB at #1 overall.

So we get a 3rd round pick if someone hires Wilks? Even for a coordinator job?

Frank Reich's Intro Presser - Today, Noon EST
Jay Roosevelt replied to Bear Hands's topic in Carolina Panthers
Everybody wants these players to protest but nobody wants to put their money and careers on the line. -
Stroud, but I'd also be happy with Young.
