Sam Darnold : Will he make it to a 2nd season here?
ForJimmy replied to glenwo2's topic in Carolina Panthers
Maybe I’m dumb or maybe it’s the alcohol talking or maybe I’m dumb, BUT if the Dolphins get Watson we should consider getting on a three team trade and getting Tua. I know behind our line he will get injured, but hear me out. He can back up Darnold until we fix our line this offseason (hopefully) and Tua has more promise than any QB in this class IMO. In on every deal right? -
Along with LT and TBD QB, right there in need is Center

If we want value like this, DJax is the way to go. His contract is up and he will want money while we have so many other options at CB. He is having a great year, but I think Reddick’s pass rush is helping our CBs look better. I’d rather spend our money in the trenches vs the secondary. If I had to chose, I’d trade Jackson and extend Reddick. Same reason I wasn’t high on the Robbie contract. We have plenty of options at WR and need to spend money on OL. -
The eye test is great because you can just make up poo. According to my eye test Mac Jones is the fastest QB in the NFL.

How is Dalvin Cook going to sit there while Jaycee Horn is pushing around one of his fans??? -
Yes! A backup with some decent potential. His mobility is worrisome…

On the bright side...Taylor looks phenominal

If he continues to play well, do we let DJax walk or sign/trade him? -
Zero problems? I said it was “serviceable” at best. It’s nearly the same line Teddy had last year. They aren’t good, but neither is Darnold. He’ll do good to throw more TDs than INTs at this rate. He had issues at USC, same issues at NYJ, and now the same here. Three step hitches and release for our entire offense? Oh good then Darnold should be one of the top at getting rid of the ball right? He is not in the lower half of the league at holding on to the ball right?

How are the FA G/C looking this offseason? I wouldn’t be against paying up for one or two and drafting a QB. I know people won’t like this, but we can sign/trade DJax for draft capital too. Henderson should be getting healthy, Taylor looks good, and Horn will come back. We might sign Gillmore to a longer deal too…

Bridgewater(2020) vs. Darnold(2021) through 6 games.

I’m indifferent, but two years with two different GMs seems like a short leash. However Tepper might not be that patient. -

I don’t get it. Unless Darnold starts progressing fast, why would anyone WANT to try it again with him next year. When he is bad he is real bad, and defenses know putting pressure on him is the way to beat us. I think he is a nice guy and a tough football player. He just shouldn’t be our QB1 if he keeps playing like this…. -
He was “hurried” around 1 out of 3 dropbacks. So 66% of the time he had time and a clean pocket (not great I know). Our line played serviceable against the Vikings. Eagles was a whole level of awful. So do our WRs suck all the sudden or is our line terrible or is the OC that we liked last year awful now? That’s a lot of excuses to protect one individual. Our line isn’t good, but played well enough last Sunday. Our WRs were considered a strength this season. Joe Brady is having some issues, but part of it is also not trusting his QB. I’m fine with moving on from Brady and Darnold if this continues.

I mean both Robby and DJ are some what proven players. Marshall and Shi where great at making tough catches in college. Something was off for there to be that many drops from different players. Maybe it was the plays, maybe it was the throws but I’m going with a little of both. I think Rhule is just getting a heavy dose of realizing he isn’t one of the smartest coaches in this league (at least not yet). Darnold was acquired for cheap assets for a reason. There was a huge (and probable) risk. This is why it was dumb to not have some sort of backup and go all in on him.

We were winning that Eagles game with our defense. Just don’t throw 3 picks and we win. Is that too much to ask? I’m not saying our team in just a QB away. I’m just saying Darnold isn’t the answer to our QB problem. Interior offensive line is definitely an issue. Erving is just meh and injury prone and needs to be replaced as well. Linebackers not named Shaq are weak and we could use a ball hawk safety. OC obviously has been brought up by many as well. QB is just the most important with offensive line being a close second.

Pat played bad in the Super Bowl with a bad line, but he still made it there. Herbert had one of the worst lines in the league least year and played fine. I’m not saying they will win a Super Bowl behind our line, but they wouldn’t blow that Eagles game and would probably take care of business against that Vikings team with a blocked punt TD at home.

I’m not saying everyone else played good. Getting blame comes with the QB position. If Sam gets excellent blocking and his WRs make crazy catches that lead to a game winning drive people will talk about how great he was. QBs in today’s game call out adjustments and get their players heads in the game when it’s needed. I’m saying he didn’t play well, Rhule said he needs to play better, hell I’m sure Sam will say he didn’t play good. My thing is if he needs everything to be perfect to have a good game, maybe he isn’t our franchise QB. Most QBs can play good when everyone around them is, the great ones can elevate their team when things aren’t going well.
-
After putting the game nearly out of reach with an opening pick, a fumble, and several erratic throws yes he did throw one TD at the end to tie it up against an average Vikings team (due to a blocked punt) which still ended up a loss. I guess he is fully redeemed then? How did he do the previous 2 games?

This I can agree with. People keep making excuses for him. Yeah WRs will drop balls and OL will miss blocks, but good QBs don’t consistently poo the bed when things fall apart. Basically if the whole offense is playing well, Darnold can play good. That can be says for most NFL QBs. The franchise ones can still play good and rally their team when the poo hits the fan. Darnold can’t do that IMO. Game Manager or serviceable QB seems to fit him. If everything is going well, he can play good.
