Serious question: Can someone explain to me *why* someone would want to invest in cryptocurrency (any crypto) vs putting the same money into a traditional investment product? I recall someone saying that crypto pricing isn't really tied to any particular financial data, but is solely based on supply/demand/what someone else will pay for it. Which isn't really an "investment" as much as it is shuffling deck chairs around / a glorified eBay. Using dogecoin as an example, as others have said here earlier, the fact that its price seems connected to Elon's tweets isn't exactly a good or predictable business model.

Regarding buy-and-hold vs buy/sell strategies (I can't find the article to provide the link, but I'll paraphrase what I recall) The story/article goes that there was a couple that was investing into their own individual portfolios. SHE had a financial advisor that would tell her when to buy and sell stocks (for sake of this story, let's say that these transactions took place once a year) HE did not have a financial advisor, but also bought the same stocks that HER advisor was suggesting. The difference is that HE didn't sell. He only bought and held. After a significant number of years passed, both portfolios had done well. The difference was that HER portfolio didn't take advantage of big market moves, and was significantly smaller than HIS portfolio ended up being. (I recall numbers similar to $700,000 vs $2.5m .... but am very likely wrong here) The point of that particular story is that (sometimes) it's better to buy and hold for years rather than months, in order to ride out business/economic changes. =-=- Disclaimer: As always, your own investment experience and knowledge may contradict the above scenario. This is not financial advice. Please consult a physician if your investment lasts longer than four hours. Past results are no indication of future results. Do not bend, fold, or mutilate.

What? (checks notes) Hadn't seen that news yet, thanks for sharing. A dividend cut due to spinning off a major part of their business makes sense. That it's a 50% cut is a bit dramatic, but also seems appropriate -- although the spinoff company could come with a dividend of its own (of some sort) to provide a bit of balance to T shareholders who hold through the event and receive shares in the new company. I think maintaining that 7% div yield was not sustainable in the long run.... so if that 50% cut brings them back to a 4% yield range... that's in line with what VZ is offering, and by itself still isn't horrible compared to other long-term income-producing investments.
-
T is a good long-term hold, as long as their dividend continues to be funded at its current level of $0.50/share (or so) for a nice return. Spinning off Warner into a new company was the right choice, and DirecTV has been slowly dying on the vine. They're positioning themselves into better financial shape. There's a reason T (and VZ, for that matter) are in many 401K/income-earning portfolios.

The evolution to being a perennial winner.
PanthersATL replied to musicman's topic in Carolina Panthers
A friend of mine is a HUGE die-hard Jets fan. I asked him what he thought about the week 1 Jets/Car match-up. His response: "Watch Darnold be a star" -
Thx, forgot these. Add the RIGHTEOUS GEMSTONES (HBO). Becoming a God was terrific; too bad it wasn't picked up for a (probably much needed, even to give it closure) 2nd season. Reminds me: AMERICAN GODS on STARZ was pretty good. Season One was fantastic, season two kinda crapped the bed for various reasons. Season three picked things back up again -- and then it's been cancelled so it's unlikely that they'll finish the story that's laid out in the book. I liked the liberties that were taken to translate the book to the screen (expanded some characters significantly, changed the order of some of the set pieces). In some ways, I really enjoyed the show more... and really want to see them wrap the thing up, whether they match how the book ended or go in some other direction.

I'm okay if they're not on the same page, exactly. But at least Fetterer and Rhule appeared to be in the same book -- which is definitely an improvement over previous years. -

Tepper's impressed me from the viewpoint of how he's not treating the team like a side hobby (as some on the board suggested may be the case). He genuinely seems more involved (and seems to be having fun doing it) than we expected him to be when the original purchase announcement was made. Still, a business is a business. Having been with any number of companies that have been bought/sold over the years, new management is always smart to sit back and see what is/isn't working before making dramatic changes. -
THE GREATEST QUOTE IN CAROLINA PANTHERS HISTORY
PanthersATL replied to Zod's topic in Carolina Panthers
When a Panthers quote makes it into the Falcons' schedule release video (and it's pretty much the best thing IN that video), is enough to rank in top 3. -
(although it would help to know the types of shows you like/hate.... some of the things on the above list cater to a particular audience type)
-
no particular order, and some items may contain questionable subject matter for some audiences. Barry (HBO) What We Do in the Shadows (either the movie or the series. Series on Hulu) Letterkenny (Hulu) Bad Habits, Holy Orders (Hulu) Always Something in Philadelphia (Hulu) Selena + Chef (HBO) Year of the Rabbit (helps if you turn CC on) American Horror Story (skip season 7, all the others are good. Watch 'em in order) Hulu Orphan Black (uh.... Amazon?) Dave (Hulu) Snowpiercer Season 1 (wasn't a fan of Season 2) - TBS The Outsider (HBO) The Challenge (Paramount+) you'll want to catch up with all 36! previous seasons first) House Hunters ("Comedians on Couches" episodes - Discovery+) Eco-Challenge (Amazon) Top Chef (Bravo) Alton Brown's Quarantine Quitchen (YouTube) Flight Attendant (HBO) 2 Weeks to Live (HBO) We Are Who We Are (HBO) RUN (HBO) P Valley (Starz) Mandalorian (Disney+) WandaVision (Disney+) Falcon and the Winter Soldier (Disney+) Hamilton (Disney+) Blindspot (last epi makes middle seasons worthwhile) - Peacock? Hulu? Renovation Island (Discovery+)

Draft Analysis: "A massive value-destroying error"?
PanthersATL replied to PanthersATL's topic in Carolina Panthers
One thing that I think we can all agree on is that Darnold has certainly bought into representing/participating with team shenanigans in just the few weeks he's been with us, vs the weeks (dare I say months?) where Teddy took his time to change his Twitter photo from a Saints graphic to anything else. Likely has nothing to do with the thread topic, other than "value" can be calculated in many different ways. #TrustTheProcess -
This sorta lines up with the opinions being expressed on ESPN's radio coverage of the draft during the Bronco's pick when they didn't select a QB. Let's just say it made for some amusing radio that the Host was not at all pleased that her team didn't pick up a QB with their pick (She also had some strong words on the overall Bronco QB situation as it currently stands)

Draft Analysis: "A massive value-destroying error"?
PanthersATL replied to PanthersATL's topic in Carolina Panthers
Some would say that would be the Bridgewater Effect. -
Here's some analysis about HOW MUCH VALUE DO TEAMS LOSE WHEN THEY DON'T DRAFT A QB IN THE FIRST ROUND: https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/how-much-value-do-teams-lose-when-they-dont-draft-a-quarterback-in-the-first-round/ The article focuses on Fitterer and Rhule's decision to draft Horn instead of Fields. There's a bunch of number crunching and talk about a quarterback's draft value vs drafting other positions. Those Huddlers who like to dig into stats and numbers will probably like those parts. But here are some other excerpts from the piece:

2021 Carolina Panthers Schedule and some thoughts on it
PanthersATL replied to Zod's topic in Carolina Panthers
That's okay. Aaron Rodgers has done that before, he can do it again. -

word is that NEvCAR ticket prices are crazy. Anybody with stories? -
Granted, it's a new stadium and a MNF game at that -- but I hope these prices are because of that New Stadium Smell vs what we may see charged in a few years when the Panthers eventually hit Vegas. (That'll be what, 2024 season maybe? 2025?) At these prices - and if these are what's consistently for sale throughout their first year allowing fans there, they'll be lucky if any seats are filled. What's the most you've ever paid for a Panthers single game ticket? What's the most you WOULD pay for a Panthers single game ticket?

Based on this (as of a few minutes ago), not North Carolina. On the other hand, it's *almost* 69%. Nice.

I hope week 17 is vs ATL or TB. I've been a fan of the final two (or three) weeks being divisional games across the league. -
According to Forbes' latest report on the Most Valuable Sports Franchises, the Panthers are #42. Over the past 5 years, our value has increased 63%. More importantly, we rank ahead of the Saints and the Bucs (isolating to just NFL teams, we're #22 out of 32...) https://www.forbes.com/sites/mikeozanian/2021/05/07/worlds-most-valuable-sports-teams-2021/

Saw this terrific profile on the Panthers' social media leader. It's always nice to see (at least one of) the people who run the Best NFL Social Team out there... If you haven't already seen the article, it's worth a visit: https://charlotte.axios.com/255917/the-woman-behind-the-panthers-social-media-and-her-miracle-child/ (Mods: didn't see this posted yet today. Disney has released their new NFL themed tshirts today ( available at Fanatics and elsewhere), just in time for the draft not really like taking the same graphic (football Mickey) and slapping every generic logo onto the shirt since it makes every team shirt look exactly the same as every other team shirt... , but if this is the sort of thing that strikes your fancy, are you a Panthers Mickey person, Panthers Vader, Panthers Luke, or Panthers Avenger fan? https://www.nj.com/giants/2021/04/nfl-disney-release-t-shirt-line-featuring-mickey-mouse-star-wars-marvel-how-to-buy-giants-jets-eagles-nfldisney-t-shirts.html
