You pay him the same as Watt. Here is a link to the most sacks the past 4 years. Now, he isn't "top 5", however, you need to put a little of the past 4 years in perspective. How often did the Panthers fart around and "drop him in coverage" Numbers 1, 4, 5, 7, 8 all play a specific "rush" position. Burns is getting ready to do so for the first time in his career. Some of the other players on the list in front of him had a legit secondary pass rush threat so they were not facing as many chip blocks or double teams. He came into the league much younger than some of these other players and has been ascending in production, size, and leadership Yeah we gave up two first round picks "You don't get nice things on Temu"..... If you want someone Elite, you have to pay them Lastly, and IMO, most importantly..... You set the example to future players that if you are drafted here, develop here, the TEAM WILL REWARD YOU. That helps build culture. The cap is going to increase significantly again next year to above 256 million. That increase alone will cover his salary.

Updated Depth Chart (from Panthers.com)
BeenPounding replied to Santee_Panther's topic in Carolina Panthers
Here is the real question.... Scheme wise are they really worse? Outside of Phili, depth is a general issue across the NFL in the trenches. If we are truly relying on our #4-5 DE's to win games rather than provide flashes and depth we are better off not being successful. Having to pay Burns, Chinn, Brown, and Horn sooner rather than later requires us to do our best to develop young talent rather than rely on washed up vets -
Marshall practiced today, so he is likely good to go. Haynes is fully expected back by week 1. Chark is the one I am worried about. He may go on IR after Tuesday. I'm nearly certain that we pick up an OL help and cut Irving before his contract is guaranteed. One, if not two of those TE's is going to be cut. Most likely Sullivan with an injury designation so he could possibly be resigned or added to the PS. Wright is a big question mark. Maybe since there haven't been any real eye opening receivers cut they are just waiting until the last possible second so he can go to the PS. The D-line could also be altered since a few of those guys are not subject to waivers as well. Our top guys, Tuttle, Brown, Williams are obviously safe.

Bradley Roby just released by the Saints.... Sign that man
-
I'm pretty sure you just won best comment of the day.
-
Germain Ifedi was cut by the Lions..... Could he be an upgrade over Cam Irving? Where could we look for tackle upgrades? Ivring and Michael Jordan truly scare me as our tackle back ups
-
I would love to see if Steven GIlmore is cut from the Lions, he showed out last night I'd add him to the 53 over Taylor Jr. Antione Green could be available, he has speed and more size than Smith. Dazz Newsome is also available.

My prediction..... Offense - 25 QB (3) - Young, Dalton, Corrall RB (4) - Sanders, Blacksheer, Chuba, Brown TE (3) - Hurst, Tremble, Thomas - Don't be surprised if Thomas is let go in favor a a vet FA addition. This is one of our weakest positions. WR (6) - Chark, AT, Mingo, TMJ, Laviska, Smith - Don't be too surprised for a FA addition here either. Detroit has a few guys who looked good at this spot that could be on the chopping block. Smith is not big enough to be a long term help here. OL (9) C- Boz, RG - Zaliva, RT- Moten, LG - Brady, LT - Icky, Mayes, Jensen, Irving, McCrary Corbet to PUP - Look for a LT addition to take the place of Irving Defense - 25 DL - (5) Brown, Tuttle, D. Willams, R. Willams, Anderson Edge - (6) Burns, Huston, Haynes, DJJ, Barno, YGM/Leota - I think we ship YGM off in a trade, if not Leota is cut ILB - (4) Shaq, Frankie, Jones, KGH CB - (6) Horn, DJAX, Chin, Hill, Henderson, Taylor S - (4) Bell, Woods, Franklin, Jammie Specialist - (3) JJ, Eddie, Boom-Boom Heckler Practice Squad - Brandon Smith, R. Wright, Kobe Jones, Derek Wright, Jennings, Deonte Brown, Wooten, Ricky Lee, Sullivan, Lots of pick-ups to round it out. Maybe Denzil Mims or Greedy Williams
-
I am offering to personally call Michael Jordan. Maybe send him to the Bucs so he can "protect" Baker.
-
Remember which putz had control back when he was drafted.....
-
I really feel that that is Andy Dalton's role now. He could be starting for a few teams, not many, but a few. If we had to keep it rolling for 2-4 games I could calmly get behind old big red.
-
Yeah, but there was no blitzing and only shell coverage. That makes a world of difference
-
Looking at the current Denver depth chart they don't have a DT listed above 320lbs. Their starter is right at 305lbs. Maybe it really isn't a need in this defense to have a wide body there. I saw a few 2-5-2-2 looks on the field during the game. We have Burns and YGM who have played with their hand in the dirt before. You squeeze the big guys (Tuttle/Brown/Williams) in closer on the line and it closes up the middle allowing Frankie and Shaq a little space to move around. You still have Burns to rush, YGM/DJJ to hold an edge and Chinn as the 5th LB. It actually operates more like a 4-3 than the traditional 3-4. Maybe I'm wrong.... just thinking out loud here.
-
At first I was upset watching Jones drive down the field on his first and only drive, but as I continued to watch the game I noticed a few things..... We did not have Huston, Burns, or Brown playing. That makes an incredible difference. There was no elements of planned blitzing, even with the back ups. We either rushed two at the DT spot and held at the edge, or sent the three down linemen while the edges on both sides tried to read the plays. Nothing was complicated. With that being said, I think Evero is looking for guys who know their base roles before all the razzle dazzle. Who is staying in lanes, who know where to drop in zone, are our defenders hitting the gaps? I am concerned with the middle of the defense. We need a HUGE NT or two that just clogs up two blockers. If that isn't cleaned up we will be susceptible to getting run up the gut on the regular. Maybe I'm wrong. I'm sure there are people out there who know more about 3-4 defense than I do. Thoughts?

Agreed that Byrd gets it over Shi. Shi isn't as good on ST. Judging by quotes from Corbet and other linemen I'm 98% positive that Nash Jensen makes the roster. He is one that can play all 5 positions. If he can hold it down better than Cam Irving I'm sold. McCray will make the team too. I bet they keep 9 linemen on the roster with AC on the PUP, and cut another position when he returns and run with 10 OL. Leota is making noise. I'm pretty sure Barno is headed to the PS. YGM is a tough one. If he isn't clear cut better than Leota, why would you keep someone on the last year of their deal in place of an UDFA who you can control going forward? I think the Huston signing speaks volumes. His signing along with D. Jones will allow Frankie to move inside and out. Just my 2 cents. Corner is a mess. Wright being hurt most of camp is killing the evaluation. Unless he jumps over STO and Taylor I think he is on the practice squad. That could be good, because if he is hurt other teams can't evaluate him either so we can continue to develop him. I'm scared to death that DJAX gets hurt in week 2 or 3 and we are fugged on the outside.

Another week, more waiting. Football needs to arrive!!!!! From reading reports and quotes by other players I can 100% see Nash Jensen making the 53. Honestly, I want someone to step up so we can send Irving packing. My bottom 5 on the roster to get to 53 are: (53.) Rowe (52.) Leota (51.) STO (50.) C. Irving (49.) Byrd. My last 5 to cut are (1.) YGM, (2.) Coleman (3.) R. Wright (4.) Brandon Smith (5.) D. Wright. We need depth in the secondary. I only have kept Rowe because he can play both CB and Safety, but if Jammie steps up Rowe becomes replaceable. If I had to choose between YGM and Leota I am choosing the younger player who we can control during his development. Unless YGM breaks out, he is hampering the development of others behind him. I chose Byrd because he is different from the other WR's in the room. He's a legit speed guy. I could see Viska returning kickoffs or punts, he does really well in Madden at that! (lol) I don't see anyone signing R. Wright or B. Smith to a gameday 53 week 1 if we don't. That gives us at least the opportunity to keep them as our protected 4. Starters in Bold Changes in italics Offense QB: (3) - Young, Dalton, Carrol RB: (3) - Sanders, Chuba, Blacksheer WR:(6) - Chark, AT, TMJ, Mingo, Viska, Byrd TE: (3) - Hurst, Thomas, Tremble OL: (9) - Icky, BC, Boz, AC (PUP), Moten, Mayes, Nash Jenson, Zaliva, Irving, McCray Defense DE: (3) DB, Anderson, D. I meant to put him on there and put the right side of the line in bold. I'm middle aged, technologly is baffling to me. Additionally, I may or may not have been doing this when I should have been "working"

I've noticed there is no game this year where they are giving out tickets for a blood drive. To me, that is a sign that ticket sales have gotten better. Take it for what its worth
-
Who would you like to see us sign as a CB? Personally I would be happy with taking a chance on Ronald Darby or Troy Hill as a 3rd/4th CB option. I know Darby is coming off an ACL injury, but that was week 5, he should be good to go by training camp. Anyone else have any thoughts?

Potential $1.2B Panthers stadium renovation discussion
BeenPounding replied to Lame Duck's topic in Carolina Panthers
WOW! That's an amazing concept. Big props for sharing that. I used to work in commercial construction back before the great recession, and I could only imagine what it would take to build something like that. No way that could be done in one offseason. The team would either have to relocate or build the stadium first. If I were in the local government, I'd push for a dollar for dollar match. If Tepper wants to get $1.2 Billion from taxpayers, he needs to match with his own $1.2 Billion. I could only imagine the potential for a new site at the Charlotte Pipe area off Graham St. The Panthers have had their eye on that land for a while. When that company got all the tax breaks and incentives to move to Oakboro our friends on Mint Street were very accommodating to the process. Maybe a new site could even include some easily accessible parking lots for a better tailgating experience. The only thing I hated about the construction of the new baseball field in Charlotte was it was built over the best area for tailgating.
