A lot to like about the player, but he also has injury issues for days.

Yep. Another Teddy season is literally waving the white flag. The fans know it. The locker room knows it. Tepper and Rhule have said plenty to let everyone know that they know that Teddy isn't the guy. You can't go into next year with Teddy as your starting QB.
-
Yep. If we're going draft, I'd prefer to try to trade Teddy for anything to get out from under his contract then sign a different vet. I just think that bridge between Teddy and the Panthers might be burned and I'm not sure that locker room vibe would be a great one.

Once Watson is officially traded, y'all have 24 hours to roast the poo out of @SizzleBuzz before I send him to the shadow realm.

I get it. I'm just looking at a significantly more talented QB than Teddy at a significantly reduced price point.

Insurance. You caught up on this backup idea. That's the plan IF everything else works out. Everything very well may not work out.
-
I want no part of that option. If Teddy is back next year I'm out until we show that we're actually serious about trying to field a winning football team.

I just don't see $8.5M as "big" at QB. Teddy was a middle of the road paid QB at 3 years/$63M/$33M guaranteed. I wouldn't want to give Trubisky anywhere near that but $8.5M? Sure. There's also a decent chance he shows enough to get signed elsewhere and then ends up factoring into the comp pick formula the following year.

One of the Core Pieces that should be untouchable

This kid gets it. He never played with TD or Olsen, but he gets it.- 21 replies

I'm not sure that we know what he is. We know what he is under Nagy, but I'm not so sure that Nagy isn't another Gase. All I'm saying is that it's not difficult to imagine a scenario where Trubisky ends up being our best bad option or a decent stop gap for say a Trey Lance. If you draft Lance I don't think you can plan on him being your day one starter. Maybe he proves that he can, but I wouldn't want that to be the plan.

This guy from our pro scouting department...

Say what? He's clearly the tallest person in that picture. -
I wouldn't be viewing him as a backup. I'd be viewing him as 1) insurance against the draft not going out way and insurance to not feel the need to reach out of desperation and 2) insurance against feeling the pressure to force the rookie into action before he's ready. If he ends up being a backup that's awesome! Everything went according to plan. But you can't count on everything going according to plan.

He's definitely lost a lot of muscle mass. Anyone holding out on that pipedream of him coming back can go ahead and sit that pipe down. Granted, there weren't many who were that delusional. -
The Teddy deal included $33M in guarantees. We're talking about a quarter of that. FTR, I'm only interested in doing this if we've essentially given up hope on landing Watson and have put all our eggs in the draft basket. This would be a solid hedge on that bet.
-
I would. Honestly, if I could get Trubisky in the $8.5M range, I'd do that even if my plan was to be aggressive in the draft. That's a good insurance policy in case the draft doesn't fall our way and also insurance against forcing ourselves to put the rookie on the field from day one if he isn't ready. This would be on par with what the Raiders paid Mariotta last year to push Carr and ultimately be a backup.

This year's UNC team might be the most Jekyll and Hyde team I've ever seen in sports. When they're on, they look REALLY good. But man, when they're off they can't beat anyone. They can score 100 one night and struggle to get to 50 the next. The outside shooting is always sporadic from this team, but they have the rebounding to largely make up for that. It really comes down to turnovers. They have some games where they have waves of unforced turnovers that just kill them and it seems like once the turnovers start, the shooting absolutely falls apart.

Fisher probably isn't playing at all this year coming off of a recently torn Achilles and it's far from a guarantee that he'll ever return to form afterward. That's a MAJOR injury.
