Positions likely to be addressed prioir to opening game
LinvilleGorge replied to 45catfan's topic in Carolina Panthers
I would disagree with those people. When he's been healthy he's been pretty good. His issue has primarily been injuries. We've seen horrible. Byron Bell was horrible. Nate Chandler was horrible. Matt Kalil was the worst combination of horrible and highly paid. That's not Erving. -

It could be as simple as they didn't anticipate a better option being available. $2.5M isn't much in the grand scheme of things if you think he's going to be the best option available. He's the 29th highest paid safety in the NFL. -

Therein lies the issue. Burris should be a depth piece at most. He was a liability last year and is likely to be one this year too if he's forced into a role he isn't cut out for. -

FS is the biggest glaring weakness IMO. There's no one on the roster there who anyone should be happy to see getting meaningful snaps. LT is a question mark for sure, but there are guys here to compete. If Erving is healthy he can be a decent option. There's the possibility of Moton kicking over to LT also. I think this staff is deemphasizing LB and that's okay with me. DE depth doesn't concern me. I think we'll look for potential upgrades across the roster, but I don't see DE being a priority at all. -
Given what we had to endure from Teddy last year, I honestly wouldn't mind a bit of this. I'd rather fail while trying than fail for lack of trying. If that's the expectation every QB will always come up short. They're all gonna occasionally fug up. No way around it. Those guys on the other 31 teams are professional football players and coaches for a reason.

Say what?

If you give me the choice of playing in a trash division vs. a competitive division, I'll pick the trash division every time. Step one is qualifying for the playoffs. A trash division makes that a lot easier.

I will be pleasantly surprised if we don't have a losing season.

Rappaport critical on Sam Darnold during McAfee Show
LinvilleGorge replied to TheCasillas's topic in Carolina Panthers
Yep. If Darnold isn't the answer, I think we're done dumpster diving at QB. Teddy was decent and we moved on quickly. I still have hope we'll do the same with Darnold if he proves not to be the answer.- 22 replies

Also don't underestimate the negative impact of the '80s high school offense LSU was running prior to Brady's arrival.

Panthers interested in bringing back Tre Boston?
LinvilleGorge replied to TheSpecialJuan's topic in Carolina Panthers
He didn't look good last year. I hope someone emerges at camp or there's a surprising camp cut elsewhere. -
Panthers add to coaching staff (exclusive)
LinvilleGorge replied to TheSpecialJuan's topic in Carolina Panthers
Is this the same guy that was with the Giants, because good lord he looks a lot different now and not in a good way. -
I'm just saying, that's an average arm/average athlete for an NFL QB at best and he went #3 overall. What impressed me most with Burrow was his ability off schedule. The guy threw the same ball whether he was in a clean pocket, under pressure, running for his life, whatever. It was kinda crazy. I think that's where the talk of the Mahomes comparisons came from.
-
When 25% of your schedule year over year is straight trash that's a significant competitive advantage. That division has just historically been two of the best ran franchises in the NFL against two of the worst ran franchises in the NFL and the results have conveyed what would be expected.

Did you watch any of Tim Couch's career?

Ugh. So basically torrential downpours next Monday - Tuesday.

LinvilleGorge replied to TheSpecialJuan's topic in Carolina Panthers
Everyone available this time of year either sucks, has serious injury issues, or serious off field issues. I don't think Tre is hurt and I don't think he's ever been a concern off the field, so... -
Oh, feel free to challenge my opinions. I've been wrong before and I'll be wrong again in the future. That guy's entire shtick is not voicing an opinion and just bashing anyone who has anything other than a straight homer line opinion.

Bingo. Our reputation around the league is what it is for a reason. It will stay that way until we change who we are as a franchise in terms of consistent success.

I think Ryan is about average. I'd put Cousins below and Baker above. I mean, Mayfield did throw the longest pass ever thrown in an NFL game this past season. Your "average" guy isn't doing that.

I can't see the Allen comparison. Allen is significantly more athletic and has a significantly better arm. Allen's big knock coming out of college was accuracy and he's greatly improved in that department. Dude has a cannon.

We know, man. They're know more about football than us. Every move they make is well founded. Everyone who disagrees with that is a moron. Meanwhile, somehow the Panthers have an overall losing record. That losing record has this far gotten worse under Tepper. Marty Hurney without a doubt knew WAY more than any of us about GMing an NFL football team, how the draft prospect evaluation process goes, how negotiating contracts goes, etc. That absolutely didn't get in his way of failing to intelligently implement any of that knowledge. My point is that if all you want to do is parrot that line and not actually take place in any discussion differing from that line, what is your point in being here? Serious question.
-
I think you have to either oversell his talent or undersell the concerns between the ears to be seriously excited about his prospects. I hope he proves me wrong, but I think the most likely outcome is that this forum is dominated by 2022 QB prospect discussion before the first frost at BOA.

Teddy actually surprised me with his ability to throw darts on the rare occasion he'd actually let it rip. He just very rarely actually did that.
