Teddy will likely get cut if we can’t trade him.
panthers55 replied to Ja Rhule's topic in Carolina Panthers
Not necessarily. We need to rework his contract to make it more trade friendly and Bridgewater is likely still exploring his options. -

Cap money isn't the issue. The question is whether that small amount of savings justifies not having a quality backup this year. After watching all the jags we used when Cam went down you would think a quality backup would be important and not an after thought. Sure you are paying starting money to a backup but you are going to spend 20 million for nothing or 23 million for a guy who can start a few games and maybe get you a few wins. -

You have to factor in his replacement so it isn't 8.million savings. And if Darnold goes down given he has only played 16 games one season then who is the backup? Grier or PJ? Or do we draft a guy. Seems to me that the little we save isn't worth cutting him. If we don't trade him which I think we will, we need to keep him and dump him next year. Cap room isn't an issue this year and we are one of the few teams that can say that. -
That was largely due to a crappy scheme with no pressure. Which defensive back looked good for us?

Chinn played a lot more at linebacker because we didn't have three linebackers who were decent. Buffalo nickel which was first used as McDermott coined it to use a coverage linebacker in the nickel but it wasn't a full time position but only situational. And that was based on a 4-3 scheme which we mixed in with a lot of 3-5-3 last year. We got rid of Boston because we plan to move him back to his normal position which is safety. And yes we did play cover 1 roughly 20% of the time. My understanding was we would have done it more but our secondary wasn't very good and we didn't have many who could play man. I expect we will run more of it this year. So yes Chinn could assume more of an ED Reed type free safety position as his coverage skills improve and we play more single high safety to help with the pass rush.

He is a second year player so of course he isn't playing at an all pro level yet. But his athleticism and nose for being around the ball and his hard hitting reminds me of those guys. Hopefully he has the career those guys did.
-
He played a lot of linebacker last year more out of our necessity than his preferred position. He is more of a natural safety and would be our version of Earl Thomas or Ed Reed. I think we will use him as a hybrid but put him more at safety if our linebacking corps is improved.

Teams looking to trade up for quarterbacks
panthers55 replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
Because then you have 2 guys changing positions instead of one. If you think the right side is as important as the left then you keep him on the right where he is awesome and keep looking for the left side anchor. -

I don't know if they think he can't play left tackle or they value his ability to play right tackle. It used to be that playing right tackle was easier and you didn't face as many top notch rushers but that isn't true anymore. We will see if salaries for right tackles will have equaled that of left tackles when we see the deal. -
It has been said that our front office isn't high on any QB outside of the top 2. So I expect us to pass on Fields or Lance if our LT is there.

We have suffered since Gross retired. It seems every year that we have had a decent replacement we have done well or at least not sucked. If Sewell is there at 8 you run to give them your selection before you wake up and realize it is only a dream sequence. On the other hand you might love a QB who dropped. That could be a bigger risk than taken the sure thing in Sewell. Pitts is a stud no doubt. I can't say I would be upset with a stud left tackle or stud TE. I think Rhule will go LT.

Actually he said it would be great if we could play together and that he would help out all he could. Everyone knew about Matt Kalils injury so it wasn't a guarantee either way.

https://franchisesports.co.uk/sam-darnold-analysis-bright-future/ Seems at least one guy thinks Darnold's potential is pretty good. I hope he is right. If you are a Panther fan I would hope you are rooting for Darnold to be amazing.. Some folks almost hope he sucks so they can be right. I don't get it.
-
I would think asking a center about the QB you just played with would be very insightful given he knows about his ability to call protections know what was called and then what happened, etc. Kalil was a probowler until he had injuries and surely knows the game. This disparaging him because of his brother or his injuries really does him disservice. He was the anchor for the offense for a long time.

Darnold part of the draft day strategy
panthers55 replied to JawnyBlaze's topic in Carolina Panthers
It is unclear whether he can learn a better system or not. Brady took Burrow and in 1 year turned him into a phenom so maybe he can do the same thing with Darnold. I figured that Brady would have signed off on this so he must think he can resurrect him. So I am along for the ride. -
Darnold part of the draft day strategy
panthers55 replied to JawnyBlaze's topic in Carolina Panthers
If Brady's system is as quarterback friendly as advertised then it should help Darnold immensely. I hope he has a high football IQ. Because from what I have read you need to be able to manipulate defenses by moving personnel to get favorable matchups. Something Teddy did very well. Then build a wall in front of him to give him confidence. And if the coaches are great teachers there is every reason to believe that Darnold can thrive in this system as long as he is accurate and can read and react quickly. -
This is exactly what free agency is all about. Fill in the holes so we can focus on the best values in the draft. If there is a QB we really like at 8 then we get him. Darnold's money is not going to stop us from bringing in a draft pick at QB. And if no one is there we have to settle for the first or second best left tackle prospect or heaven forbid the best corner or best D lineman to pair with Brown. All because we have the luvury of not chasing a QB in the draft and giving up the farm.
-
If he plays well we got our QB for the future and it cost a fraction of what it would have cost to move up in the draft and pick a rookie who is unproven as well. I think it was surely a risk but not a huge one.

Panthers give Teddy permission to seek a trade
panthers55 replied to Zod's topic in Carolina Panthers
That would be my fall back position. Because unless you can trade him and only be on the hook for signing bonuses and guaranteed money, you end up eating a ton of dead cap if you cut him. -
Panthers give Teddy permission to seek a trade
panthers55 replied to Zod's topic in Carolina Panthers
I think the renegotiation is to keep him at a reasonable rate if he can't find another team That sets the price. I wonder if new Orleans is interested now that Teddy knows our whole system. Not sure we should be ushering him out so quickly. We could use a cheap vet to mentor these guys. Just not 22 million for a timid starter. -
we were the only ones who wanted sam darnold lol
panthers55 replied to Sean Payton's Vicodin's topic in Carolina Panthers
We weren't competing against another team for Darnold. We were giving the Jets enough to make it more advantageous to trade him versus keep him. We won't know if it is a good trade for a year or more. Frankly I said to do this last week so I think it will be a good move. I like the aggressive attitude -
If Darnold is a hit then it will be a slam dunk. If he doesn't play well then it didn't cost that much for a potential starter. Frankly I l.ike management coming in and swinging for the fences.

Extending Moton will save cap not cost cap. First year cap costs on several year extensions are always cap friendly since the signing bonus is prorated. Unless it is front loaded where most contracts are back loaded.
