Immediate thoughts vs more rational thinking.

They're wrong plenty.

Fans who think they know better than professionals because they won a championship in Madden are wrong more.

Whether you play Madden of not, one of the great things about the internet and modern technology is that you have a wealth of information at your fingertips.  Even the random nobody fan can educate himself enough to know when the professionals don't know what they're doing.

Or enough to think they know more than they really do.

There are hundreds of draft eligible prospects on an annual basis. The most dedicated draftniks on here might know 20-25 or so names and maybe even have a basic knowledge of the players (key on that word 'basic').. That's pretty much nothing compared to the volume of info that goes through a team scouting department, but it's enough to make Joe Fan think he's an 'expert'.

(he's not)

The vast majority of the people doing the biggest whining on this board are doing so because the team didn't draft one of the ten to twenty or so players that they've read about or watched on YouTube.

Reality Check: A draft choice being a good or bad pick is not dependent on whether or not you've heard of him.

That's erroneous, I'm sorry.  Not only is there enough information out there to form your own opinions about players, but there's enough evidence to show that people on the "inside" fail at talent evaluation every year.

So using Google and YouTube puts you on equal footing with professional personnel guys...

Uuuuhhhh, yeah

"Enough evidence to form an opinion" is frankly a pretty low standard. Guys here can watch one highlight reel and think the prospect in it is the greatest player of all time (or the biggest bust ever). Heck, they just know it!

Reality: If you seriously think you've got a level of access to player information that's anywhere near what guys who can have actual face to face contact and the opportunity to scout and interview those players directly have, guys whose entire job revolves around player evaluation, all I can do is shake my head.

Yes they make mistakes. When your business is, as Ernie Accorsi put it, "human beings evaluating human beings", that's going to happen.

But even so, I'll still trust the professionals over some guy sitting at his computer.

Dude, trust whoever you want.  I really don't care.  Trust everything NFL teams do and everything your government tells you.  You have that right.  I have the right to have intellectual curiosity about football and how the NFL works, and I have the right to form my own opinion about what teams do instead blinding believing everything they do.   And yes, there's enough information out there to develop and pretty substantial football IQ, if you really give a crap about learning.  There are NFL playbooks you can download online, plenty of footage of prospects (not just highlight reels with rap music, by the way.  There are entire game cutups of prospects available on youtube, where you can see the good and the bad of the player.), and if you don't like using the internet for anything other than facebook or twitter, there are plenty of books available at the library or Barnes and Noble that can greatly enhance your vantage point as a fan of football.

As you've admitted, NFL GMs are wrong all the time.  If they were 100% right all of the time, I wouldn't bother forming my own opinions.

No one's arguing that you don't have the right to your own opinion.

What I'm telling you is that your opinion isn't as smart or as informed as you think it is.

Scouts and personnel people watch hundreds of hours of game tape, often breaking down every single snap of a particular player (Gettleman did that with Benjamin). They watch everything, not just some 15 minute YouTube cut up.

Beyond that, they can talk to the coaches, teammates, teachers, parents, and obviously, the players themselves. They can get scouting reports, background checks...pretty much anything they want. And this isn't something they do in their spare time. They spend every working hour at this because that's their job.

When you can match that, talk to me.

And consider this for a moment: Both the player and the evaluator are human, so both are imperfect and unpredictabLe. Even with all that information at hand, it still possible for them to make a mistake.

So knowing that, explain to me why I should trust the opinion of a guy who watched a couple of YouTube clips.

Sorry, but the notion that you can get as much information as a professional scout just because you have internet access is just ridiculous.

New here. Is this the majority of what goes on here? Someone gives an opinion and then the other person attacks saying you have the right to have an opinion, but you're not as smart as you think you are? Just want to know before I waste too much time here.

You might want to wait until training camp, right now they have nothing to talk about so they go after each other.

Why don't you guys just completely skip the irrational part and take everything in context (whether good or bad)?

Makes u look like much less of a fool when you dont have the emotional range of a 14 year old girl

Welcome. This site is 10% of people using logic and reason while trying to talk football. With the other 90% telling them that the panthers are the best and everything else is wrong and youre stupid.

Here's every convo:

Guy 1) Cam is the best QB in the league!

Guy 2) hes extremely good yes. But im pretty sure Aaron Rodgers is just a tad better.

Guy 1) WELL THEN GO ROOT FOR THE PACKERS YOU HATER!!!!!

I guess you just jumped in and figured every post would make perfect sense/be agreeable to you. Are you new to forums period? Because this one is like most- you get all kinds and you won't like 'em all, so deal with it or keep searching for the forum of your dreams.
