Pens May Look To Re-Acquire Jordan Staal, What Would It Take?

Recommended Posts

I can see the Penguins trying to get Jordan Staal back. It's been tough to replace him since he left.

According to Josh Rimer of sportsnet.com the Pittsburgh Penguins may look to reacquire Jordan Staal in the offseason.

Personally, Jordan is my favorite of the two Staal brothers and if we were going to trade Jordan then Eric would have to be involved in the trade as well.  If that was the case I would take nothing less than Evegeni Malkin.

All joking aside, if there was a deal to be made; I'd ask for Sutter and Maatta. We gave up Sutter, Dumo, and a very high first round pick (Derrick Pouliot) the first go around; and in my mind Maatta is equal to Dumo and Pouliot.

There's probably not a deal to be made, but we'd have to give quite a bit back for our best two-way forward.

btw, this is why you don't have brothers on a team unless you're like the Sedin's who are actually elite players. They know the GM will do anything to keep them. They have the upper hand in contract talks. Then a new GM comes in and has to fix this mess.

Give me Dumo and Jussi (since he will probably resign with Pittsburgh), and you got a deal. Or just Sutter and Maata.

Really, any 2 man combination of the above 4 is fair in my book. Problem is, I doubt Pitt wants Jordan's contract. What's his cap hit?

I actually want to give the Staal's one more chance because if we blow it up we are going to be at least three years away from competing.

So after hiring Dan Bylsma,

- The first step is to get Sutter back. Sutter is an RFA as is Tlusty so basically we need to swap rights... we'd probabky have to throw in a second.

- Secondly, I would let Bowman, Dvorak, and Bellemore go.

- Then I would re-sign Gerbe (2 mil), Loktionov (1 mil), Malhotra (1 mil), Hainsey (2 mil), and Pitkanen (2 mil)

- After that I would trade Nash,Harrison, and a 4th for a third liner like Chris Higgins.

- The next move would be to draft Virtanen (700K) who at the time I would slot on the second line with Jordan.

- To address the defense I would sign Andrei Markov (4 mil)

- Finally, I would sign Brian Elliot (2 mil) to be our back-up goalie.

- Oh and Trade Ward for some picks since I traded a few of ours away.

Skinner - E. Staal - Semin

Virtanen - J. Staal - Lindholm

Higgins - Sutter - Dwyer

Gerbe - Malhotra - Loktionov

McGinn

Faulk - Sekera

Markov - Pitkanen (if healthy)

Hainsey - Liles

Murphy

Khudboin

Elliot

This is also just for fun, but that first line would put up mad points and the second line could also do some damage if Lindholm turns the corner in the offseason. The third line is perfect in my opinion because you have your grinders in Sutter and Dwyer and a capable goal scorer in Higgins and finally not many fourth lines have a 30 point player like Gerbe.

I also think the defense could be pretty special if Pitkanen is indeed healthy.

All of these moves would put us right at the cap.

I'm getting tired of Eric Staal's piss poor attitude. When things aren't going good, he goes into pouting mode and just gets lazy and doesn't care about what he's doing anymore. He should be traded or at least have the C taken off his chest.

    • Great teams build through the draft and have several young players that start that are on rookie contracts. It's important to hit on players in rounds 4 thru 7.  These should be future starters and solid depth.  When you hit on most of your picks you free up a lot of cap space for those one- or two-year players to fill spots you are thin at. No GM is going to perfect on all their picks.  You're going to whiff every once in a while.  That was Hurney problem.  He'd nail the first pick but after that it was reach after reach and we couldn't get any depth on this team. I'm excited about Morgan as our GM and hopefully he'll be around a long time.  It will be even better if Canales can continue to grow as a head coach, both in the development of young players and play calling. I remember last season after Young came back in the lineup and started to perform well.  We saw different plays I had only seen other teams use.   If Canales's play design and play calling continue to grow. Morgan and Canales will be linked together for a long time.  It would be nice to see a Coach and GM together for a decade or two. Go Panthers
    • They also came out for the encore and the singers were dressed in canes jerseys. Pretty fuging cool.
    • She kicked ass. Obviously not the same but it’s an absolute pleasure to see this band live. What a great evening.
