Drafting Outside the Top 5

I feel like some people on this board have unrealistic expectations of the kind of players available outside the top 5 in the NBA draft.  There just arent sure-fire prospects available in the 8-10 range in the draft, you might be able to find a starter, but there are a lot of misses at this position.

Here is a list of the 15 players drafted between 8-10 over the last 5 years:

Starters: Brook Lopez, Demar Derozan, Brandon Jennings, Gordon Hayward, Paul George, Kemba Walker, Brandon Knight, Andre Drummond, Trey Burke

Rotation players: DJ Augustin, Jordan Hill, Al-Farouq Aminu, Jimmer Fredette, Terrence Ross, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, CJ McCollum

Busts: Joe Alexander, Austin Rivers

I think I was pretty generous with these groupings, and some of these guys are getting a lot of minutes because they play for poor teams who are hoping they will develop with enough playing time

I think Aaron Gordon at #9 would yield the most potential.  You cant coach athleticism.  Imo, hes got "it".  Would deffinately be a crowd pleaser.  Would also be nice to have someone represent the hornets in the dunk contest.

Give it up for Air Gordon

It's all about how you look at it:

Lopez, Derozen, George and Drummond are all allstar quality starters. (Kemba might get a nod now that America is aware there is a respectable team in Charlotte). Anyways- there are 4 allstar level players in there

That's averages 4 out of 5 years there will be one allstar in the 8-10 range. Pretty good, IMO.

    • He has made some good throws yes. His arm isn’t great by any professional measure though It might be decent enough, but the poor footwork inhibits it.  So he has to really focus on that and from what I’ve seen he is not consistent.    peace.
    • If only Bryce were 8'1" then CJ wouldn't have needed Woody Marks to carry him against the Titans nor the defense to carry him with 3 picks vs. Cooper Rush. If he were a real QB, he'd have thrown for over 250yds and the Texans wouldn't be 2-3. /s See? I can do the same dumb, lame poo that y'all do. Doesn't this make the board a better experience overall? 🙂
    • Their defense is on track to be worse than ours last year. Their run D is in the bottom half but their pass D is horrible.    32nd overall D, 32nd passD, 23rd rush D We are going to have to throw the ball against them, which means down field where they are vulnerable. Problem is Turnover Fred struggles to push the ball down the field and we have the 26th ranked pass offense. Running will help but will have to beat them through the air. On the flip side, Dallas’ offense is awesome.    1st overall, 3rd pass, 8th run.    But Evero’s defense is ranked 12th right now with the pass D around 10th and rush D around 14th.    If we can take care of the football (looking at Bryce) and we make plays down the field (also looking at Bryce) we can win, yes.
