One thing that always bug me about soccer

I'm a casual fan of the world cup, always rooting for the US.  Yet over the years I notice something repetitive in the game of soccer that grates on my nerves.  The excessive flopping on fouls.  One little tackle to the ground and cats act like they got shot in the leg, only to get up and run around like nothing ever happened.  I can't stand flopping in basketball, but it's a new level of flopping concerning the game of soccer.  Be men people, and get your butts up after a hard tackle!

Hehe.  Of course as a casual fan, I find the rules of the game very easy to get a grasp on.  With the right organization, the sport could become big nationally.  I would like to see soccer become more popular here in the states.  I think it loses some of it's fire here because it's a major sport for the world.

I thought soccer players were tough. I look at Vinnie Jones and think he may have taken a life at one point in the game. Then I turn on the World Cup because I was tired of waiting for NFL Network to talk about the Panthers and I see everyone playing the 'I'm not touching you' game.

Giving up on a play and hoping the referee awards you the foul is un-American. We love American football because your taught to fight for every inch. Never give up. That is what we are taught.

In practice American pro athletes try to influence the referees all the time. Coach K  is infamous for trying to influence officiating. Cam flopped in the playoffs to try and buy a call. Lebroning is a thing. That Tennis guy from olden times would yell at refs. We talk big about playing sports with honor and sportsmanship. But any pro athlete will put gamesmanship ahead of sportsmanship.

I will concede this, those Soccer players are very small and going at high speeds. They slow it down to 5 frames per second and it looks like acting but it's all happening in a flash. A kick to the leg can be very painful at those speeds. Of course they milk it but they are taking real pain and exaggerating it.

Let's not forget our college coaches have players fake injury to stop a high powered offense. All of these things are awful in my mind but Soccer gets all the blame for them.

In the US we call it whimpy, flopping, etc. In Europe they call it "clever". They don't see it as a lack of machismo.

Clint Dempsey did just play the majority of a match with a broken nose.

As someone who grow up playing/watching soccer and a bit at college level, I can say that its both flopping and actual hurt.

As Kendrick said when you are going at certain speeds the slightest touch and you will lose balance and fall. Plus there ain't a lot of padding so a kick to the ankle/leg etc is actually pretty painful (especially from a boot) Just imagine bouncing your toe on something and the shot of pain you get. Its similar. Does the pain last long? No but doesn't make it anyless painful in the moment. Adrenaline takes over and masks the pain and then players seem like they are fine.

Of course a lot of it is faking and trying to buy a foul, especially with how huge yellow/red cards are. It all changed about 10-15 yrs ago when the game started to get reffed differently, ie less and less contact allowed. Naturally players are taking advantage of that.

Will never say soccer players in general are not tough as I've seen numerous players play with broken nose/cheek bone, bloddy heads, broken arms etc.

I have played soccer for 6 years, some hits are really painfull but you never fall on the ground crying like a baby, you are rather cussing until the pain is gone. Soccer can be a good game but i am really really mad at cheaters, whiners and trash talkers as well, like Materazi during the 2006 WC.

    • I can only imagine the **** eating grins on the committee right now. "Oh, Bama didn't deserve it? Oh, Miami didn't deserve it? Suck it, haters!" lol
    • To say that, is gaslighting, because it isn’t true. I mean, maybe one or two people do that but it isn’t the predominant behavior. Even Frank has given him credit. I think particularly the Rams game. A couple of glowing posts.   I know I have. Gotta be honest about it because if you aren’t it undermines what else you say.  But the degree of how far I go with credit, in terms of it being a projection of future performance? Not very far. Acknowledge it, but require more of it. There is a lot of bad play to offset.    I tried to remain passive while the last 9 games (post ankle injury) played out. It is just really hard when the lows won’t go away. I failed. As high as a couple of those highs were, there isn’t enough.    I know it is premature to just say I want to move on, made my decision after 6 of those games ended up pretty much really good or not good enough, but I have had enough of being patient and letting him show the reality either way.  So in my view, he Could still validate himself to a decent degree if he smokes the last three starts. But also in my view I don’t expect to see it. Maybe one more high quality start, would be my expectation. So yes he could still somehow justify having the job next year. If that happened I still wouldn’t have much faith given the last three years and all that has transpired. Again, there is a lot of bad play to offset.
    • To start with, you wouldn’t want to count up that value chart. You would see quickly where that is headed. But you basically did a quantity comparison, while ignoring quality.  I am looking at 2023 as the start, because it became all about Bryce.  2023 you have 4 picks plus DJ Moore for offense vs 2 (80 and 145) for defense.  2024 you got the 1st overall, the 32, the 46 and the 101 for offense vs 72, 157, 200 and 240 for defense. Leave the FA IOL out of it. Which was a crazy big  investment. But it wasn’t draft.  Anyway, that is basically 4 top 100 picks for offense and 4 picks for defense in 2024. Except they were 2 first rounders, the second rounder, and the 4th was really high at 101. Vs 72 and day three stuff. Please….  Second quoted/bolded… See you think we hate Bryce. That isn’t it at all. It is nice easy way to characterize us and discredit our talking points though.   Me, I do mostly hate watching him play. But I don’t hate the person. I hate the hell out of the stanning.  It started with the very first question I asked about his footwork, arm strength, and size. Height being the principle objection. I never even got to the durability factor. There was plenty without factoring that in.  But there was rabid opposition to even asking the question of what a couple of small fractions of a second extra closing time would do for the defenders.  What the extra time it takes to flip the hips would do vs a pass rush or on the other end after the ball is in the air. Split second more for recognition where it is going for the DBs.  The tippy toe backpedal.  That poo was a mess and it has always been mess but no Bryce fan wanted to hear it. “Go get another team to root for”. “It worked in the SEC it will be fine in the NFL you don’t know football you are just a hater”.  It got worse when the real games started. It has never stopped. It is nice that many people have left that train so there is less abuse but it hasn’t stopped.  So whatever…
