2014 World Cup: Quarter-Finals

I am interested to see how the favorites do in this round.  Outside of Colombia they all struggled for at least some of their games against lesser opponents and some of them obviously did so very deep into the game.  I wonder how much of that was the nerves of a team that was expected to make it a lot farther compared to opponents that really had nothing to lose.  Either way, I really hope the matches are as good as the previous round.  My rooting interest going forward:

1-Germany

2-The Netherlands

3-Costa Rica

4-Belgium

5-Colombia

6-Argentina

7-France

2-4 are mostly interchangeable, I put Belgium fourth because I am mad at them.  If they played Argentina in the finals I would root for France but they play Germany next, thus the ranking.

Mats Hummels back in full training yesterday. Not sure if he'll be fit for a full 90 though. Low said up to 7 players have been sick in the last week, but refused to name them.

Playing 4 CBs on the back line, while also playing such a high line is a recipe for disaster. Benzema and Pogba can give those guys fits. I'd expect Low to drop the line back just a touch, but Neuer is still going to have to be a sweeping keeper some.

Yep 3 DCs on 4, are sick or injured, obviously today they are ok and feeling better.

worries :

- If Benzema is playing along side with Giroud we are doomed, Griezmann must play with either Ben or Giroud.

- Red cards are worrying me.. I won't be surprised if the French are finishing this game with 10 or even 9 players..

Germany, Colombia, Netherlands and Belgium.

That is what I am rooting for but I doubt all four I want to win will win.  I really think Brazil is going to play better as the tournament goes on and as good as they have looked this is Colombia's first real test.  That game features the heavy favorite that has struggled against a young upstart team that has looked great and so many people are siding with them.  I have seen that story too many times and it usually ends poorly for the underdog.

    • Fug Em!   Lil bastard was milking injuries most of his time here. The moment he leaves he's all of a sudden a workhorse RB and a MVP candidate.   *Poo me up I'm a big boy I can handle it.
    • Another source: NFL Rumors: Hakeem Butler to Visit Panthers After UFL Success, Wade Phillips' Praise ZACH BACHAR JUNE 10, 2024 The Carolina Panthers are expected to conduct a workout with UFL wide receiver Hakeem Butler, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Butler recorded a league-leading 652 receiving yards as a member of the St. Louis Battlehawks. He was previously a fourth-round draft pick by the Arizona Cardinals in 2019. After the Battlehawks were defeated by the San Antonio Brahmas in the XFL Conference title game, Brahmas head coach and longtime NFL coach Wade Phillips told the receiver that "I'm going to tell everybody in the NFL that I talk to that you need to be playing," via Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. Despite the loss by St. Louis, Butler still hauled in six receptions for a team-high 59 receiving yards. The 28-year-old was named the 2024 UFL Offensive Player of the Year, as he was one of only two wideouts to have multiple games with at least 100 receiving yards. While the Panthers added Diontae Johnson and first-round rookie Xavier Legette to their wide receiver room in the offseason, they could still use some depth in the form of Butler. Carolina isn't opposed to picking up former UFL players, as Rapoport revealed on Thursday that the team is also "expected" to sign All-UFL receiver Daewood Davis. Although Butler was selected by the Cardinals in the 2019 draft, he did not play as a rookie due to a hand injury and only appeared in two regular-season games as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2020. He did not record a catch. Butler signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 2023 offseason, although he ultimately didn't make the team's regular-season roster. At 6'5", he has the frame to potentially make an impact in training camp and earn a shot at making Carolina's 53-man roster. If his workout goes well with the Panthers, Butler could give himself another chance to possibly return to the NFL.
