Graham ruled a tight end

I'm not considering him to be stuck. I don't think being offered the richest contract in history at your position is being stuck. I think people are reading too much into this as well. Jimmy loves NO. He was a Saints fan before he was drafted. He came from nothing, and while obviously I'm sure he wants to make as much as he can, I think he'll go ahead and sign a deal and move on. Most contrat disputes are cause by agents, not players. He tried to break the mold, it failed, now I expect both sides to continue on.

Has he actually been offered a contract?  I didn't see that.  I don't think he has been.

The Saints could keep him like this for two years, it might not last that long, but it's the truth, and he can't do much about it.  If he gets hurt, that is on him.  So you're looking at like $10 million lost, if they do this to him for two years or even more if he gets hurt with no contract.

Pay a guy chump change for 4 years, franchise him $3 million under his value, expect him to be greatful. Seems about right New Orleans. Only way they make this right is to give him $10 million a year, otherwise I'd jump ship in 2016.

Do you seriously think any team would franchise a player at a different position so that they can pay them more?

While touting Drew Brees as the most selfless teammate ever as he holds out and signs a contract worth $100 million and $40 million of it guaranteed.

The Saints have been offering him contracts since before last season. Before the season started he was offered a contract worth more than Gronks deal. He decided he wanted to play out the season on the rest of his deal and negotiate afterwards. People act like The Saints waited until he had a monster year then franchised him and said you'll take what we get, they've been more than happy to make him the highest paid TE in history.

Some of you guys are crazy and not understanding how the NFL works....as a player you have to get as much money as you possibly can, it's not called being greedy, it's called knowing that you can go out there and suffer a career ending injury and never be the same again.  Where as the owner of the team watches from the press box, gets paid very well off of you risking your ass.   A player should be paid accordingly to his production, and to his value of the team.

And does endorsements for motorcycles he can't ride and for drug companies. Hell even Brady took a pay cut

You guys crack me up talking about Drews contract. You sound like Falcons fans before Ryan signed his new deal. Simple fact is, you have a franchise QB playing on a rookie contract. When Cam signs, it will be for more than Drew made, as every QB who signed a big deal has surpassed him since he signed.

I also don't tote him as a selfless teammate either though. As I don't think any of these athletes are.

So where, exactly, is the power for the team? The NFL would be like the NBA, where the large markets control the entire league. The Panthers and Saints of the league would have little shot at retaining Cam Newton and Jimmy Graham. Players they drafted and developed. There has to be a way to control salaries and let everyone retain their players.

exactly thank you for making that point sir I honestly would hate the nfl even more than I hate boring ass basketball if every good player took off and ran to the giants 9ers or freaking patriots as soon as they were off their rookie deal cough...cough every NBA star -.-

False. Brady didn't take a paycut. He took all of his money and spread it out over more years of the contract. Basically guaranteeing he makes all of his money while being with the Pats until the end of his career.

Is there exact numbers?  How much?  How many years?  Guaranteed?  Unless we have those numbers we can't act like we know anything.

You're one of the few then. I'm not saying he, or anyone else doesn't deserve a good contract, but don't flaunt the guy as some angel who would do literally anything for the team. At the end of the day money talks for him, and most other NFL players, with few exceptions.

Obviously Cam will get a substantial payday, but you don't see fans here pretending like he's going to take a small contract for the team.

Yeah, before the hold out there was a lot of talk about him making a deal for the Saints. I never expected it and some fans got a little butt hurt over it. But Drew had never got a substantial payday since he had been playing. And he already knew how the business worked in the NFL, when he got hurt and the Chargers threw him away. You had to figure he was going to want his money.

I see some fans here that expect Cam to "do what's best for the team". Usually when contract numbers come out for QBs. It's just human nature to hope a player feels the same way about the team as you do as a fan. But to them it's all business and dollar signs. And there's nothing wrong with that.

    • This.  He knows where the seam is about to open, cuts, and accelerates hard. He’s slippery and tacklers always seem to be taking awkward angles to get to him. No dancing. Runs low and powerful. Almost never goes backwards for a loss. We’ve rarely had the guy who bounces off of tacklers. It’s nice seeing another one.
    • I can't speak for others but yes I read it. The conclusions are based heavily around the use of the statistical metric DYAR created by football outsiders and used by ESPN for this article. It only includes players whose production began in 2000. But excluding HOF running backs who produced BIG in an iteration of the NFL that was not yet catered to making things much easier for offenses in order for them to prop up more recent candidates is rather absurd and seems like just playing favorites regardless of where one might fall on their opinion of the use of the metric in question.
