Speed & Quickness at WR

I really wanted to keep Ginn and Mitchell. Ginn also had some very clutch plays for us last season that we hadn't been accustomed to in the past couple of years from our WRs outside of the vintage Smitty sighting.

The hitch route against the Pats where he makes two defenders miss and scores the game-winning TD. Yeah, Cam got him the ball, but that was all Ted Ginn on that play.

The fuging laser beam he caught in stride while leaping, and once again making a Saints defender miss. That missed tackle was cruicial, because otherwise he would've been tackled midfield and the clock continues to run with no timeouts, instead he gains a nice chunk of yardage before running out of bounds to stop the clock.

Those are just the two right off bat, but he had more nice plays throughout the year. Damn sure made far more of an impression in those few games than LaFell ever has his whole career here, and the other WRs we've had (Ajirotutu, Gettis, Murphy, Armanti, etc.).

Not to mention his return skills. Yeah, I'm gonna miss Ginn. The dude has never had a QB get him the ball until last year.

Bet you cannot guess who had Ginn in man coverage on that play, trailing behind him.

Is an average safety on the rise. Don't think he has come close to peaking yet

Two things.

Is it possible that Mitchell is an average safety who looked good in our defensive scheme? Think of Drayton and our UFDA Melvin, as well as the chargers defense out in SD. Rivera has a knack for putting "less than" players and no names into top squads. Could Mitchell be a good young safety that gets better from here? Sure, time will tell, but my money is on that he will struggle without Rivera putting him in the best possible situation to suceed.

Two, if Greg only plays say 8 games, but we went 12-4 again and repeated as NFC South champs and progress further into the playoffs, would that still break gettleman as far as our off season moves? I find it hard to believe people can really criticize gman for this, because at the time, he didn't know the kraken would be a nutcase. If he were to just let him walk, and he turned into the next JJ Watt with some 20 sacks or whatever he had, gman would get a ton of flak for not retaining him.

Food for thought. Perhaps gman didn't trust hardy with a huge long term contract, and he wanted to see if he can repeat without any off the field trouble. 14 sacks and a franchise record is worth 13m in my opinion. Now that I think about it, its almost smart he only did the tag (at the time). Right now obviously it hurts to have a guy on the cap that won't play (maybe we get compensation for that?) But, we have no obligation to come back to him next year.

I'm rambling, not saying you oppose everything I say rum. Lol food for thought everyone

You are one of the more blind faith posters on here.

I think Mitchell has special skills speed plus Mack truck hitting abilities. He's still learning the safety position. He's 26 and was never given the opportunity to play fully in Oakland. People can chalk it up to the front seven but he was put on an island and flourished. He was put in charge of the secondary and flourished. Now that he's left people just say oh but the front seven. I think he is criminally underrated around here now that he's gone.

And if Greg hardy gets suspended for some games our defense is going to suffer. We have major holes/question marks at cb, wr and oline. That tag money could have been used elsewhere. Time will tell but that 13 mill is a big chunk of money that could have been spread around. I don't know how it will play out. I'm optimistic but not blind.

I guess the positive though as Huddler pointed out is that we aren't strapped long term with him.

Next year we should be going into the offseason in much better shape with him off the books. DG can assess and make a move without any blowback $ wise.  Hardy has a lot to prove this year and I hope he kills it and puts the offseason crap to rest.  If not, it's his loss bc Rivera can retain a top D without him imho.  It's good the Panthers have the leverage in the scenario but it could still hurt us this year.

Yeah I said that earlier. At the very least we won't be cap strapped next year with hardy

So if we repeat and go further into the playoffs but hardy doesn't contribute much, is gettleman on the line for that? I tend to be optimistic but I'm not blind. I asked legitimate questions

This happens every year. You think guys like Tiquan, King and Brown are going to breakout and have a great year.

Expectation - Speedster and going to help the team alot by catching bombs.

Reality- Tiquan will be Dominic Hixon with the occasion 1 or 2 catch per game if lucky. King and Brown see about 10-20 plays in garbage time.

it will then be because the other players on the D stepped up. But that means we wasted 13.1 million dollars that could be used in other areas of need. particularly O line vets.

gettleman is on the line for everything because he is the one making all of the decisions.

Not necessarily.  It just depends on the personel.  Even though we still have Shula, we have an entire new WR unit so I'm thinking the ball does in fact get spread a little differently.

Looking at how each of their respective teams last year played them, I can see Avant & maybe Underwood getting more like 15-25 receptions each rather than one being up near 40 and the other very minimal.

    • We’re in a pickle. My best hope is we protect him and can run the ball vs most Ds and the WRs are healthy so he has every chance to not look like what he looked like in too many games last year.
    • I'm really not stressing about upgrading from Bryce. I'm frustrated with our inability (or refusal) to recognize overall bad QB performance and failure to seriously address the issue. QB is the most impactful position on the field, and we're not only settling for what we've been given to this point, but we've rewarded it with a fully guaranteed 5th year extension for a player that's never played 2 NFL franchise QB quality games back to back in 3 seasons. I can't understand how that's ok from a coach's or GM's viewpoint. Successful franchises don't do things like this. It just doesn't make sense.  We do not have a top half of the league QB right now. Since we don't have that player, we should be looking for him. Pickett isn't it. Grier isn't it. Bryce hasn't proven he is yet. Until you have that sure fire franchise QB, you keep looking. You're not consistently making the playoffs, a deep run, or a SB appearance without one.  What's the worst that could happen? We end up with 2 potential number 1 QBs? How horrible.
    • Easy to understand Pickett, if this is anywhere close to on point. Canales wants to get as close to Bryce as he can- get the pace and timing in the throws as close a he can to Bryce. So the other players don’t have to adjust so much, to a new guy.       If Cam was the 1, he would look for a rocket arm.  But Bryce is the 1. Look for limited in the same way.  Low velocity, plenty of air under it, feels just like home when Picket comes in. And you have the guys on the second team not having such a radical adjustment (if they have to play) like with Dalton to Bryce.    Enter Grier. I guess we will collect those types.
