Newton-Benjamin relationship tight already

Nothing that we probably don't know but a nice fluff piece from David Newton. Quoted a few of the good stuff from it. Link below.

That's the image I got recently as Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton and rookie wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin sat across from each other at lunch. Nobody else was at the table. They were so engaged in conversation it was like nobody else in the noisy room existed.

It's the same way during practice. They're almost always side by side during stretching. They're often side by side when the second, third and fourth teams are running drills.

"I've only got one beef with Benji, and he knows it and I'm pretty sure y'all know it," said Newton, referring to Benjamin catching the winning touchdown for Florida State in this past year's BCS National Championship against his beloved Auburn.

"I'm telling you, we've got that unique relationship that we hold each other to a standard,'' Newton said. "It's funny that when we first started talking, I didn't know Kelvin Benjamin from ... doggone Ronald McDonald."

As Newton described the conversation, he tried to imitate Benjamin's voice that is a few octaves higher than his. He recalled that Benjamin phoned not only to introduce himself, but to say the NFL was "tripping" because it wouldn't let him have the No. 1 jersey he wore at FSU.

"I said, 'Well, you've got two problems,'" said Newton, who wears No. 1. "First, you've got the league to worry about to get No. 1 and you've got me to worry about to get No. 1.'"

"He's my little big brother," Newton said. "And for so many reasons, I'm helping him and he's helping me. I'm trying to tell him, 'Look, I know what you're about to go through. This is the best time in your life. Appreciate it. When you come out on this field, love it .... God has blessed you with having physical specimen-like features, and shame on you if you don't use those to the best of your ability.'"

Hopefully the off the field closeness will translate to esp on the field and they'll join the great QB/WR duos like Aikman/Irvin, Young/Rice, etc.

"I didn't know Kelvin Benjamin from ... doggone Ronald McDonald."  - Sounds like KB was also clueless about Cam, if he thought he could get #1.

What a great leader and it shows you that Cam truly "gets it."

    • I think where they would be picked if redrafted before both classes have played enough football to really tell.  Baker literally looked like a washout with us after Cleveland gave up on him, then turned world beater with the Rams, got a prove it deal with the Bucs and has looked awesome ever since. Asking where Ward would’ve went had he went in ‘24 is just stupid.  I’m no GM, but I wouldn’t have taken Williams #1 either.  I would’ve taken Joe Milton way higher than he went.  I think Shadeur should’ve been a first round pick this year.  Point being, opinions are like buttholes, everybody has one.  It’s my opinion that Ward has that “something special.”  I get that feeling that he’ll be an even better pro than he was a collegiate QB because of whatever that quality is.  I think he’s gonna surprise a lot of people, especially being such an under appreciated first overall pick.
    • Where do we get our T-shirts and hats? Pretty sure this is the first championship ever in professional basketball or football in Charlotte!
    • Nice turnaround for Kon.  I’m still a little worried about his ability to create for himself and others, but it was SL.  Come regular season, he will playing a much different role and shots will be there for him.  He showed some reason for hope - and not just him, but the whole squad.  I suppose for the first time ever, we have drafted and acquired enough young talent that we actually not only competed for once, but won the whole thing in summer league.     Kon, Simpson, and Sims made all the difference.  Almost every year prior I felt we always struggled because we usually didn’t have a floor general/real PG to get us into offense.  This was such a breath of fresh air.  And look at us!  We finally are champions!😂
