this cannot be overstated. winning is the biggest thing. bandwagon/fairweather fans are made into real fans by the team winning. I know so many people that pull for Carolina as their "second favorite" team, even when they've lived in the Carolinas most of their lives. I know many more that only care about Carolina football when the team is doing well. When Carolina finally reaches perennial contender status (in the eyes of fanbases across the league, and thus the media) instead of perennial underdog status, the bandwagon/fairweather fans will begin to emotionally invest in the team. Once that process starts, it cannot be reversed except through years and years of losing seasons, which i dont think will happen again to this organization. Once real fans start to be made, the people in the stadium wont have any choice but to begin standing up/cheering at the appropriate times. we will also have less problems with hoards of fans of visiting teams invading our stadium...

 

in short: the quickest way for the Panthers to solve the problems with their fanbase is to give them something to cheer for year in and year out.

 

my grandmother said it best: "The NFL is a late-comer to the Carolinas. All we know is college ball." The Panthers have to start winning year in and year out for the people of the Carolina's to feel enough pride in them to become more emotionally invested.

This is why I quit going to games. Terrible atmosphere in the stadium for the most part. I have had season tickets to USC games for years and for most SEC games, EVERYONE spends more time standing than sitting. Never ever heard anyone ask anyone to sit down.
