Weezer - "Everything Will Be Alright In The End"

So, I know we have some Weezer heads on here as I discussed them in a previous thread. Well, since then, Pinkerton, and various other singles here and there from their catalog have been a big staple in my rotation. Myself, I've learned to play 85% of "Buddy Holly," lol... And upon riding this wave of inspiration, I bought tickets to my first concert for a band that was still relevant, together, and capable of making new/great music... I went and saw them play at the DPAC in Durham and it WAS AMAZING. While there, I noticed Karl (their offical historian/videographer) setting up cameras everywhere and filming them throughout. I pointed it out to my wife and thought it was pretty cool, and still wondered and felt like it was something I should keep track of... it didn't seem like something that a band acknowledging they're on the downside of the hill would do...

A month or so later, I hear they are back in the studio, making a new album with Ric Ocasek as the producer (frontman of The Cars and the guy who produced The Blue and Green Albums). There was quite a bit of hype around this because it felt like they were trying to get back to their roots. Shortly after that, they started leaking videos titled "EWBAITE," that teased the coming album. Each mini-sode contained a snippet of a new song and featured a bit of a story that intertwined with all of the other pieces from the previous episodes. It's still fairly mysterious but, engaging. There's a cryptic feel to it and there are parallels between a fictional band and Weezer's catalog and career. Anyway, to my surprise, one of the videos featured video from that concert my wife and I went to... amazing.

So, coming full circle, the album (which features awesome artwork as well) comes out October 7th but is currently streaming live on itunes radio. They also released several of the songs through various outlets so far... it's actually a pretty amazing turnaround in terms of public perception. So far, it is being hailed as their best effort since Pinkerton or Green, depending the review you read. Most critics agree, it is actually an inspired work, which they don't feel was there since those early albums.

Pretty excited my self personally. Loved listening to them growing up and saw them when they were in charlotte back early this year.

Havent listened to any of this cd yet because I want to be surprised and give it a good listen through when it comes out.

That said the into to My Mystery sounded just like the office intro lol but cant wait

Yeah man! Their shows are still full of such energy. It was amazing. I think they opened up with " My Name Is Jonas" and I felt like tearing up, lol. It felt like all my life had come to that very moment... lol. Deep.

I like that strategy though, I would've done the same but when I found out Ocasek was producing again, I couldn't help it.

And my only gripe so far with the album after streaming it was that My Mystery was my early favorite but they changed those words to Anonymous.

that's how i felt when they busted out dope nose. although i personally didn't think they were particularly energetic… it's never really been cuomo's style. when he acts energetic it's almost self-depricating and purposely ironic.

 

i didn't bother with hurley or raditude but i'll be buying this album when they release it.

it's always weird to see how bands play songs live that you've listened to as recordings for years upon years. i couldn't believe they palm-muted the versus to buddy holly and it sounded like the main riff was a synth, not a guitar. they also played dope nose a couple steps down and it completely threw me off.

 

and no pinkerton songs, that was a bummer.

You're right Phil, in terms of his on-stage demeanor, he isn't much for movement or jumping around. I think I feel the energy of the music and how it affects everyone in the building... even in that Buddy Holly video I recorded above, it just felt like there was something in the air, almost everyone was out of their seats and moving around. It was in the air... I think their energy is actually in their playing and singing itself, but the music has the powerful resonating effect on everyone. I think for me, as I said, I had all these emotions and memories attached to these sounds that came rushing through as soon as the music started... and there is something about the rawness of hearing it live.

And you echo a lot of what I have read regarding their recent albums up to EWBAITE. Ratitude and Hurley seem to be unanimously viewed as their worst, least-creative efforts. I didn't buy them either... this one is definitely worth it though.

I just was listening to "The British Are Coming" on the way to work... at first I thought the premise behind it sounded kind of lame and I listened to it last week and thought, "meh." But then I found the melody of the chorus repeating in my mind randomly lol... I gave it another listen and then another and then I found myself wanting to hear it again. It definitely has grown on me... I also find it has elements that remind me of Pink Triangle and Across the Sea... it does feel like it's the old them, all grown up.

I read someone on their facebook said it was like Blue Album and Maladroit had a baby that loved Pinkerton, lol.

Sorry, would've replied in one post but didn't see this one before... yeah, I think that was the other thing... it sounds like when you saw them it was lackluster for whatever reason. I felt like when I saw them, there was that creative spirit flowing through them, as they were working on their first album in four years, and back with their old producer... there was definitely a presence about them. They played El Scorcho and I think another Pinkerton song at the concert I went to... the place went bananas on it. When they played Island in the Sun, they started throwing beach balls around and were tossing them back and forth with the crowd. Rivers joked with the crowd and it was kind of like an ongoing dialogue. He seemed genuinely appreciative of everyone coming out and it looked like they all enjoyed it. They were laughing and smiling at people as they were playing... just a great performance. It was all I could hope for. And I did notice on Buddy Holly, and you notice it in the video, Brian actually does play synth parts on the keyboard throughout, but I didn't notice it until afterwards... but i'm not as attuned to what i'm looking for or hearing as you yet musically.

NPR music called it the album of the year, Pitchfork (whom notoriously gave them historically bad reviews and ratings for their most recent efforts) say it's their best album since either Pinkerton or Green.  According to metacritic, it has now surpassed Maladroit as their best album since Pinkerton in their entire catalog.

      Hard to pass up millions for a couple of days work per week for a coaching gig in the NFL that is 60-80 hours each week during the season and a more relaxed 50 hours a week during the off season. Yeah, I'd love to see him as our DC but hard to see him giving up the cushy job there if he gets it. And he's going to be a great commentator for the network.

      Really, I think that is where negotiations come in. If you've got a QB getting you to 10 wins but statistically he's not a great performer, then you say look you can take $22 million or you can try it on the market. Because let's face it, out there, any leadership skills that we're seeing aren't going to be on the table, it's just going to be performance and that lands him in the QB2 market, which is much, much less lucrative (although any of us would love that money).  No one is saying that Bryce will be a $50 million QB, barring something short of a miraculous jump. I'm just saying that if we are winning somehow with him at the helm, then it would be fuging stupid to dive back into the rookie pool all over again. Let's say we do hit the 10 win mark, heck, let's call it 11 and a second round in the playoffs. I think we can all say that would be a really uplifting result and one that should be doable if we have good play. What do we do then? Here's what I would offer if I were Morgan and Tepper. $25 million a year for 3 years, each year with up to $10 million in incentives for touchdowns, wins, playoff depth, being under 10 interceptions, completing a full season, passing yardage milestones, taking less than 15 sacks. Look, Bryce isn't a Ferrari, he isn't a Corvette, or a mid-level BMW. He's probably a new Toyota Sienna that will definitely get you somewhere and bring the whole team along with it, no fuss but not a lot of pizazz.  And really, it's about the destination, not about what drove you there.
