get on the gus bus

Admittedly haven't watched that much Auburn this year but isn't it pretty much the power run game we always have tried to run on steroids out of the spread?

Obviously it's probably much more complex than that but that's the one thing I remember being impressed with from the Iron Bowl. A seemingly unbeatable Alabama defense looked mortal when they got in the hurry up.

currently the tigers are running the option because A.) their qb is a converted DB from UGA and B.) that's the formation they have the personnel to run. Gus has gone on the record saying they're running this offense because that's the players he has to work with. He hasn't had enough time to recruit his dudes yet.

Also lol everyone in the SEC is on steroids.

???

Gene Chizik won the 2010 Nat'l title with Cam.

Gene was essentially the coach in name only because the yellowood guy didn't want gus to be HC without HC experience.

Gene did absolutely nothing and was fired as soon as they could reasonably fire him and bring back gus.

this is well known SEC gossip. Gene was just there in 2010.

Gus made Chizik. Gus went to Arkansas state and Chizik promptly ran Auburn into the ground. Auburn realized their mistake, canned Chizik (who hasn't found a coaching gig since then) and in his first season Gus came within a KB catch of a national championship.

I think they're referring to the fact that Gus Malzahn was the OC of their national championship team and the real brains behind the offense.  Once Malzahn left Auburn they sucked with Chizik.  They fired Chizik and brought back Malzahn and they're in the national championship again.

Yeah - it finally clicked for me.

Gotcha - had no clue he was leading the offense on that 2010 Auburn team.

    • Totally.  I'm less comparing them as players and using him as a reference point.  I legitimately think Bryce is capable of being a better NFL QB than Kyler has been.  Kyler has no clutch gene and doesn't seem to have a grip on the locker room, or much love for the game.  Much different body types/strengths and weaknesses.   Crazy to think-- but Kyler is at year 7 as a 1.01...38-48-1 on his career, 0-1 in the playoffs. He's somehow played well enough to keep it going but crazy to think he's barely even touched the playoffs.  Hasn't done anything that special for the Cards.  That's what you don't want to be stuck in.  Cardinals are in softball purgatory with him.
    • It's not analysis. There was no attempt to analyze anything or even convey new information at all.
    • As to the topic, I've complained before about "superstar" mentality, i.e. the notion that you can win championships with one superstar player surrounded by a group of mediocre fill ins. It just doesn't work. The Manning-Brady rivalry was something of a showcase for that. The Colts general approach focused everything on Manning. The Patriots? Oh, they also had a superstar quarterback but they built a complete team, especially on the defensive side. This sort of thing is why I've argued many times that "system quarterback" should be to considered a description, not an insult. I know everybody loves the "MVP" athletic types, and they're fun to watch, but that's not necessarily the true path to consistent winning and championship glory.
