Early review of "those" 3rd downs

without getting too technical because the all-22 isnt made available until later (for whatever reason), we can still look and get a good idea of whats going on. At the game i was very frustrated watching the ball sail on 3rd and shorts, but i was i drunk and hollering at the opposing bench so i wasnt reallywatching the plays unfold.

First one were going to look at happened in the 3rd quarter after the interception. its 3rd and 2 and what you have is KB and Avant running short crossing routes with olsen running a wheel route out of the backfield and cotchery clearing the safety on the other side. Here you can clearly see that KB is wide ass open, but if cam throws him the ball, its going to clunk off his helmet because hes not reading the zones right and hes not realizing he could turn into the hot read.

This one frustrated me because Cam delivers a catchable ball, albeit a hard one. But again, Cam has no immediate bail out due to the other receivers failing to get any separation and timing being off. The checkdown wasnt even close to being an option so the only throw was down the field again. (im not going to post 9124912874 screen shots so just take my word that the short dig was blanketed, the checkdown had a sitting LB, and cotchery got both hands on the ball.

This next play seemed to be a clear designed play to olsen with the way the two outside receivers run right at their man and cut inside to give Olsen room underneath his route (corner). Cam missed this one.

This one is just flat out self explanatory and it has nothing to do with Cam. Look at the big yellow line and look at where all our routes are going save for a slow ass Avant thats not even close to being a threat to get a first down (that db would have picked the ball). I mean its 3rd and 5 and 60% of his options were 15+ yards down field.

Like i said, this isnt exactly definitive proof of anything until i can watch the all 22 tomorrow but a glimpse into what kind of play calls are in Shulas 3rd down cycle. Do with it what you will.. when the coaches film is available i might be able to get into presnap reads/adjustments but for now we just have to settle for this. But for now, i see terrible playcalling (shocker) and one terrible throw. Plus notice how far back the O-line gets pushed from the LOS and how ineffective some of our route runners are on each play.

Take it away boys...

trust me, the DB was basically jogging behind avant and baiting cam to throw that ball.

Hang on, let me do some math....

9....times 7.....carry the 4........divide by Cuba......

Yep, Cam can throw faster than that guy can run. He's not standing behind the WR waiting, he's chasing him.

Of course, Cam probably would have overthrown or thrown behind him so.....yeah.

    • damn I wish somebody would sign him. This has been going on for weeks.    I think if the team wanted to sign him we probably would have heard something about interest on our part.    Or any TE. It looks like they have set that room. And we have taken guys two years running, a guy like this would be blocking them. We need to see if they have it or not. And we should see if Tremble is gonna ever do anything.      In general, with the TEs
    • Dude, there aren’t rose colored glasses big enough for you to call this “not a bad draft.” BC was not a good pick. He was taken with the 6th pick in round 3 and he’s been a backup OL. Tremble also wasn’t a win. Another 3rd rounder who’s easily replaced. Only reason either of them started games is because of injuries or a lack of a better starter. Chuba’s got heart but he’s had one solid year behind a solid run blocking unit. Other than that he’s underwhelmed and like we saw with Dowdle and Foreman, it’s not hard to find cheap pickups who perform as well. Horn has been a good starter but honestly that draft had so many solid starters we could have taken. With as many picks as we had, him and Chuba is absolutely a bad draft. We needed OL and BC and Brown was a terrible effort. You clearly didn’t watch the Senior Bowl if you thought Brown had a chance in the NFL. The huddle draft folks wanted Humphrey and Smith and instead we got crap and Mahomes was the winner.
