I was wrong when I said special teams were ranked 28th. It's actually 32nd.

Any statistical analysis of Philly Brown has to account for that half of his return yards came off that one fluke punt.

Well, Ginn had a 71 yard Touchdown return as well. So, not sure what it is that makes them so much different. Statistically, of course.

You should be comparing Ted 2013 vs Brown 2014 with us. Dont forget Philly had that 1 TD which seriously skews his numbers.

That's fair. I'm assuming Ginn had better numbers when playing for us last year. But to play Devil's advocate - all of our team's stats were better. Also, you could even make the argument that because we got better starting field position from Ginn, every other facet of our game was slightly elevated.

Btw guys, I don't have a horse in this race. I'm just pointing out some things to make the debate more interesting. Honestly, I think both our STs are crap and even had we retained Ginn, wouldn't have made much of a difference. Rogers, to me, should take the full blame for it too. The guys look less coached more than anything, imo.

His was legitimate, Philly's was not. That's the difference. It was a great decision by Philly to notice that, but it was a bizarre fluke play, not a great skill play.

All the talk about Philly Brown's TD skewing his numbers reminded me that we're still 32nd in special teams rankings  EVEN WITH a long Philly Brown punt return touchdown factored in. We might have broken their system if that hadn't happened.

We might have set records without it lol

Ron Rivera 4 years as HC, the scoring defense and special teams has been one of the league worst and he's supposed to be a good DC. If that isn't enough to can him, I can't watch the panthers next year with him. 4 years in your career as HC and you hit the lowest point, there's no coming back. By now he should have a successful system in place

2014 Panthers rankings:

Scoring Offense: 27th

Scoring Defense: 29th

Special Teams: 32nd

Yep we definitely need to sign Ron to another extension on top of the other extension. He has definitely earned it. Smh. We are either stuck with Stoic Ron for several more years or JR is going to have to pull some funds out of his Bojangles account.

This post is the most concise and accurate reason I believe Cam Newton will explore options other than Carolina come contract time. There are simply too many issues to address to even come close to making the Panthers a viable contender in the next 2-3 years.

CaroLOLina Panthers. Yep I don't want to lose Cam but he must be getting tired of playing for this pathetically run franchise.

I actually heard something about this from the inside:

Toub was expensive so JR wouldn't pay him. Rodgers wasn't even originally considered to even be an assistant but he was dirt cheap. That's why we have Rodgers.

In that case, I'm going to interview for the next ST coach opening and yall can hate me for "dirt cheap".

    • This is about getting open and YAC....and the QB we have.  You basically are just highlighting average depth when targeted vs 2 players. .  And yeah, I often say AT is a small slow reliable TE in terms of what he does for us.   That's what he is.   I think a couple of you want to make this into a Renfrow argument.   I'm a Renfrow fan.  Renfrow does not check the box of what a BY O needs either at the slot.  Renfrow just a niche roleplayer at this level.  it's easy to look up how horrific AT is with the ball in his hands and in terms of getting open.....and it's also easy to look up what a low ceiling of an offense the steady AT diet produces w/ BY.
    • The one time he's actively tried to lose was the best we've ever done.
    • I simply acknowledge BY is the QB.  And just like we did when we drafted him.....the type O you would need to setup around him for success was always pretty simple.  But we have done virtually the opposite.  XL dropping some passes isn't why we were ranked the 32nd O and 30th passing the past 2 years.  *Ricky Prohel was brought up only in regards to role function he served on the team.  Niche/specialist.   He wasn't eating up the snaps in the O.    AT should have a similar snap %. People could MAUL Ricky Prohel and put hands all over him.   We got to the Super Bowl in part because we were mauling guys (our slot CB).   You can't do that now.  AT has a MUCH easier life and still can't get open.  Or run.    If you live in 3 WR sets, with a weak armed QB, and you choose to put someone who can't get open or run in the slot.......well, your are going to have a weak pass O.  That's by design IMO.
