finding an offline mobile device

so despite this being my fifth time to southeast asia i fell for the oldest trick in the book. a few days ago my credit card info was stolen and i had to have a new ATM card mailed to me, but it didn't get here in time for my departure, so the cash i have with me is going to have to last me the whole trip, which means i'm cutting every cost i can. i like walking, so taxis are expendable, and after landing at the airport i decided to walk the four miles to my hotel.

three blocks from my destination a couple of girls zip up on a motorbike, flag me down. the lead one is acting all friendly… my first thought was prostitutes, since it's 3am in vietnam. she pulled up and asked me a couple of questions, and i was eager to use the vietnamese i've been studying for the past month, and started answering them and conversing in vietnamese… then suddenly before i know what's happening the other one slides a hand into my pocket and they take the fug off and leave me standing in the dust wondering what the hell just happened… and then i realized it was gone.

anyway i was in rage mode all night, hostel i made reservations at wouldn't answer the door, i had to find another place, and the wifi wouldn't work there, so i couldn't use find my iphone until the morning when they reset the router, and by then the damn thing had been turned off. it's listed now as an offline device… any of you tech-savvy guys have any ideas on how to track it down? i thought you couldn't turn GPS off of the phones so you could track it even if it was turned off. If someone wipes the phone, does that kill the GPS signal when they do turn it back on?

GPS depends on the battery. My wife's iPhone was stolen, and we were told that all we could do is the remote lock and wipe once the thief turned it off. It makes it into a brick that can't be jail broke or have information retrieved from it and Therefore makes it worthless.

Short of giving one us your # I don't know how else you could locate.

My wife loses her iPhone every couple of months so I use the locator frequently. Pm if you think that will help.

full metal jacket was the first thing that flashed through my mind when i realized what'd just happened. thank god i put my wallet in my other pocket or i'd be up poo creek without a paddle.

anyway i've tried to trace the phone, but to no avail. turning it into a useless brick is an option, but the problem there is once you've locked it out, you lose the ability to track it by GPS… at which points it's just as useless to me. all i really do is spite the asshats that took it. which is fine i guess, but it doesn't do me much good.

I would like to start off by saying, what did you learn? I always keep locals at least an arms distance away. As an American they'll spot you from a mile away.

I do feel bad saying that. I hope it doesn't ruin the trip

i've always been proud of my cunning in situations like that. i've gotten my way out of tourist scams and robbery attempts countless times all over the world. i have no idea how it slipped past my guard. maybe it's because the chick was hot.

either way, pejorative miscreant nailed it. nothing good comes on a vespa after 3am. yall write that one down

oh and the little fuger that did this has hacked into my gmail account and icloud… i've spent the past hour on a poo-ass internet connection battling him to out-lock each other out of my account. i think i won, but not before i sent myself the following message

Tôi sẽ giết chết bạn tối nay.

which i hope he read along with the rest of my mail he went through cause it's a death threat

    • I appreciate the honesty in your posts--I am not sure Canales is rusing(?) because I don't think we are good enough yet to draft players for depth on day 1.  I do think we are in limbo, fwiw.  At 19, I think you are drafting second rounders in the first.
    • We are in a unique situation here. Just my opinion. Three things: Moton’s playing health has been gradually declining as he is aging, while his contract is a drag on the payroll.  Something will give with him sooner than later but I think 2026 could be it.  So.. need a right tackle by 2027. At the latest.    Icky’s individual situation is unique as well. They would have had an extension done by now if not for the injury. We only have him for this year. With no assurance he will ever be the same player.  It would be reckless just to assume. Now we have Walker for one year. And that is a major relief. Maybe he is the answer, but the team that knows him best let him go and it was cheap for us to sign him. So how much did they value him?    We look to be needing two tackles by 2027.  And have poo for depth this year as well. So anyway we could draft a guy for 2027 RT and groom him this year, and see how Icky does, and act as needed in 2027. Spread out filling the two holes over 2 years.    Then I remember, hey if Bryce doesn’t get a Lot more consistent do they extend him? Hoping not, if he isn’t really good.    So then we are looking at the 2027 draft which people say is gonna be loaded with QBs. If we need a LT and a QB what is the pick gonna get spent on?   Taking into account the recovery success rates cited here on the Icky surgery, you might want to plan for him to not be the same player. rather than assume he will be and get caught with your pants down.  It is a tough situation.    And factor in that it is critically important to protect this QB, always, but especially this year where it is said to be make or break. And how you might feel about that.    All of it points to a real possibility that these things converge in the negative, like Bruce sucks and Icky is not the same. In that case if you want to be assured of getting LT secured, the only place you can do that through the draft could be very well be 2026 1st round.     For me, I would like to err on the side of caution.  Cover for these outcomes. It wouldn’t be fun. Added benefit is if we do have a tackle go down this year we will have a guy there. Because I don’t know what we have now.
    • I agree. In a perfect world I wouldn’t want to draft another WR, but in this draft it’s fine based on the value of who will be there at #19.  All of the top tier guys worth pick #19 at other positions of need will be long gone. Only exception is Dillon Thieneman, but he’s almost a shoe in for the Vikings as the Harrison Smith replacement. Some posters on here want to draft an OT just to check a box without realizing the concerns and risk that comes along with said player. Sounds like XL to me… desperately drafting need… KC is a pretty safe player.  Produced all 3 years in college and last year in the SEC vs a lot of top corners in this years draft. He single handily dropped the South Carolina CB Brandon Cisse’s draft stock with how bad he abused him.   Sometimes it’s best to try and hit a double instead of going for the home run. This draft screams “go for the double”. Esp in the first.
