Adopting a Puppy...

Has been incredibly difficult.

 

Perhaps someone who has volunteered in the field can shed some more light on it for me, but I'm growing incredibly frustrated with the entire process...  As a kid that grew up with dogs and puppies throughout my adolescence, I have desperately been trying to find a puppy for my family, especially my children. 

 

So, I have been checking in with local shelters, craigslist, and classifieds non-stop for the last week or so and have noticed a troubling trend.  Everytime a non-pitbull puppy appears in a shelter, "rescues" swoop in and adopt them *(FOR $25 TO $50) as quick as they show up.  When I check local rescue sites, these same pups are now being advertised and marketed for adoption...  ONLY DIFFERENCE IS, NOW THEY ARE GOING FOR ~$225.

 

WTF?!?!  So, that is the part that pisses me off.  And it's not only the rescues...  It seems the shelters can't keep puppies for any amount of time...  If it's not a rescue, it's individuals coming in and adopting them, and what do you know, Craigslist and classified ads are popping up all over the place with cute, mix breed pups, with idiots charging $100+ for them!!!  Some lady was "rehoming" aka SELLING some lab-border collie mix puppies on CL, using the usual asshole generic closing line, "rehoming fee will apply."  I contacted her, guessing it would be around $100...  This idiot replies back that she's selling them for $300!!!  LOL.

 

The best dog I ever had growing up was a German Shepherd.  It was like 15 years ago and my mom found him through an ad.  The couple that was selling him bred them, had them registered and everything...  but they told my mom that they suspected a chow had broke in the fence and impregnated the female, so they ended up selling that litter for like $50 apiece.  My dog looked every bit full-blooded German Shepherd...  I was telling my wife earlier that I just don't see deals like that happening nowadays because people are just so dishonest, money hungry, and idiotic. 

I know you can adopt a pup from the SPCA here locally for $95 (after a horrible experience adopting with them that didn't work out), and that is with all of their shots, dewormed, spayed/neutered, AND microchipped.  So, explain to me how some dumbass can keep poaching these animal shelters for the desirable, cute-looking puppies for $30 or so, then turn around and demand $200+ for them, claiming it is for vet costs?

If they were truly non-profit "rescues," then how about adopting all of those numerous pit and pit mixes in those shelters?  I guess those don't fetch a good price on the open market.  Sorry for venting, but this is bullshit.

I know of at least one shelter where I live that requires time spent with the puppy before adoption, usually 4 hours or so over a period of days. It weeds out the people who are just getting them to "rehome" them, and also helps make sure that the puppy is a good fit for the family and not an impulse adoption. You might want to call around to some places and see if they require something like that.

Because the sad reality is if all the true adoption and rescue organizations took in all the pits, they wouldn't have room for anyone else because those shelters cannot find homes fast enough for them.

 

I've worked with several true non-profit SPCA (not affiliated with the ASPCA) chapters and rescues and I can tell you those do not charge ridiculous amounts of money for the adoptions. They generally would like to have the costs of any medical treatment, perhaps the neutering/spaying and a slight markup just to cover the overhead, but most of the true organizations will work with you.

 

As a board member of the local SPCA chapter I was associated with in VA, our cost to take in a pup, shots, spaying/neutering/micro-chip and care/feeding of the dog until adoption ran in excess of $300 per dog. Most of those costs were absorbed by us, hence our non-stop fund raising efforts.

Ever since that German Shepherd I had as a kid, I've always wanted another one... I just am not going to pay 500+ for a pup right now with three kids, knowing I'm going to have to put so much more money towards it after the fact... And with the possibility that someone will end up dropping some off at a shelter or selling them cheap for some reason...

Ever since that German Shepherd I had as a kid, I've always wanted another one... I just am not going to pay 500+ for a pup right now with three kids, knowing I'm going to have to put so much more money towards it after the fact... And with the possibility that someone will end up dropping some off at a shelter or selling them cheap for some reason...

I got frustrated as well and just decided to make weekly trips to the animal shelter and Humane Society.  Reason being is that these places do not update their websites like they should and the pups you see on the website are no longer available.  Got lucky by by being persistent and got this awesome little guy.

      Dan tends to attack one specific position group per offseason and the sprinkle others throughout the roster. He extended Moton, signed Hunt, Lewis, Nijman one offseason and then extended Brown and signed Wharton and Hunt and drafted Jackson next offseason. My guess is he attacks LB and Edge this offseason.    1. What do you do with Icky? Likely a scratch for next season and due a massive contract (if healthy) They will bring back Nijman and Christensen and draft a guy on Day 2 is my guess and hope one of them can fill the hole. 2. Coker has the talent for 2nd WR, but do you pay a guy who gets hurt that premium? I think hes your number 3 simply due to risk. Will the Panthers seek another vet or go surprisingly high in the draft? They will probably sign him more and longer than the RFA Tender to keep him happy and not break the bank in the process. Can see them getting a Vet in FA like Tutu Atwell or Hollywood Brown. Somebody with speed but also isn’t overly expensive. I think Horn and Tremayne stick around and unfortunately Legette. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Tremble released and a real TE in brought in, there is a good FA group this year. 3. Do you give X more feature time? Or cut bait now? I wouldn’t be surprised if they traded him but I’m willing to bet he gets one more year. Maybe Canales can find a role like Shenault had with McAdoo.  4. Planning the long term/short term on OL Like I said I think Christensen and Nijman are brought back for T with a Day 2 rookie and prayer something sticks. Moton, Hunt, Lewis return ofcourse. Probably resign Corbett as a safeguard at Center but I think they go C in the 1st or 2nd. Wouldn’t be shocked to see Morgan trade to the back end of the 1st to get a solid C and add picks. 5. How do you address LB? I think Rozeboom leaves. Hoping CJ Allen or Sonny Styles is still there is too big of a risk. They probably go get Kaden Elliss or Leo Chenal and pay good money for them. Maybe a guy on Day 3 for depth with Cherelus and Martin-Scott. Also think he takes a swing at Edge, wouldn’t be shocked to see Hendrickson or Oweh here.  6. Do you bank of Chuba bouncing back?    I think Chuba remains Chuba. There are some decent change of pace backs out there this year that will be cheap. Still developing Etienne and Brooks may be healthy. I think it’s Chuba and that crew maybe a veteran that’s not Dowdle. More like Deejay Dallas who was here already once.    I also think Dalton calls it and they get an upgrade at back up. Nobody that wouldn’t endanger Bryce’s job but somebody that isn’t 55 years old either.

      This is my answer. If I got board I would just do guest drop ins to obscure podcasts but would definitely collect the cash from Tepper.
