The worst thing about overacheiving

Is that it gives so many fans unrealistic expectations. Lets be honest here, this team was not SUPPOSED to be in the playoffs the last 2 seasons. Our priority since G-Man has taken over has been to fix the cap, find players to build around, and be a consistent contender a few years down the road. We have holes everywhere people. Our OLine and receiving corps is arguably the worst in the league. We start two rookies, a first year starter, a washed up safety in our secondary and our nickel corner has been strictly a special teams player his whole career. Look at the remaining playoff teams and try to find as many weaknesses as we have. Weve been so spoiled to have players like Luke, Cam, and TD to make up for the numerous deficiencies this team has. On paper weve had no business being in the second round of the playoffs the last two seasons but weve gotten there due to starpower at important positions. Cam isnt perfect, and alot of you want him gone, but the truth is theres no team we cant beat with him under center. When he finally gets help its going to be unreal to watch him. Point Im trying to make is that we arent there yet, but we soon will be. This team is right on the cusp of being a powerhouse for a long time, and i think the next few years will prove it

Most fans don't understand the concept of trying to build something.  They demand you only function for the very next season.

 

We live in the now.  I think we have a good foundation.  But we are still a couple years away from maximizing our potential.  That is a positive and we should continue to build with that in mind rather than chasing the immediate gratification of being a one year wonder

I think you could safely say the Panthers had the worst offense in the divisional round. You cannot neglect offense in an offense driven league. We cannot go into next season expecting our defense to hold everyone to 10 points 

 

I never want to hear "they just aren't built to come from behind" again. Because falling behind is part of the NFL. The Pats came back from 14 point deficits twice today.

 

I heard John Clayton say something once that made sense. "Teams built to run the ball and play defense will always be hovering around 7-9 wins and occasionally put it together for 12 wins". That play style of keeping the game close and trying to win at the end will always be a 50/50 proposition. 

 

Seattle has made it work because their roster is stacked and their QB is unique. If you look at how much those Seahawks are making...Super Star players all under 10m a year. Their cap management has been pristine.

Good point. Just wondering, but how do you think they managed to have these players accept these kind of contracts? Honest question. I have a feeling we will experience something similar here with Gman. Seems to not overpay and stuff

I don't know exactly how they did it. Maybe it was hometown discounts. Maybe it was all the PED stuff, players could have taken guaranteed money when it was offered. We signed Charles Johnson to one of the last big pass rusher deals. Teams started getting more frugal after us when they realized a rotation was better than a big name. 

 

I think a big part of it is they take guys that aren't in high demand like a Luke Willson or a Doug Baldwin and they make them work. They got Marshawn Lynch for a 4th and a 5th when feature backs were out of style. They got Browner and Sherman as big physical corners when quicker guys were in style. So by being different they got great players at good value. And of course Russel Wilson...

 

They drafted really well but they also were innovative in their use of personnel. When they drafted Bruce Irvin in the first, everyone laughed. But he's a useful player for them.

      This season only ends one way... We win this Sunday. Bryce is decent. We take back 1st place...   Only to then get our brakes blown off in the last two weeks.

      Here's one of the most maddening things, that will be shown in full light over the next three weeks. The same people around here that called Darnold a bum and Mayfield a washed up over draft are also the ones saying Bryce is a catastrophe. Yeah, and I've been one who said Bryce wasn't big enough, brave enough or capable enough. I said back in the day that Darnold had a lot of fight in him and got shouted down. And on Mayfield, heck I didn't know, I just knew we had a very, very bad team that was run terribly. But I saw both of those guys go out there and resurrect their careers and be play-off bound since shaking the Carolina clay dust off their cleats. And we sat there and cat called their cars as they pulled out of the parking lot, laughing at what nobodies they were. Over the next three weeks, those two guys may just serve us sh!t sandwiches and then settle down to their just desserts. And then we'll probably let Bryce go off into the realm of other teams. And when that happens, will we see him coming back, better than before and we're left to re-sit this cycle all over again? Same naysayers, same results, same revolving carousel of ponies and pundits?  Will we end up looking like the Temu version of the San Diego Chargers back in the day watching Drew Brees come to fruition in the previously moribund Superdome while we whiff on a Manning pick just to be jilted for Phillip "Always a Bridesmaid" Rivers?
