What does Gettleman do about Cam

I think he will get an Andy Dalton type of deal next year. Not as much as wilson did because of the 3 straight playoff runs and Superbowl but a lot.

JMO

this.

the bar has already been set for contracts for up and coming young QBs. no gm in their right mind is going to pass up contract standards like that.

the only exception will be wilson, and maybe luck.

The deals for guys like Dalton and Kaepernick center around the fact that they did not have all that much leverage. In regards to Newton, that is not the case at all. He has basically been our offense since we drafted him, and he has plenty of leverage here, don't kid yourself.

newton doesn't have the leverage people think he has.

he is just as much a liability to the offense as he is an asset.

Its tough to draft a quarterback. Right year right picks etc. Retreads rarely do more than game manage at best.

Newton will get paid. About the leverage. All teams unless your qb is a bust have the same issue.

The Jets didnt want to keep Sanchez and tried to draft another and how did that workout?

Dump him for another next man up doesnt work for quarterbacks if your franchise actually wants and expects to win.

I do think more will be seen where GMs try to do something that limits the cap taken up by the quarterback.

Notice Denver is trying but Peyton making 23 million a year makes it tough to keep people that matter around. They going to have problems with demaryus thomas and a pile of others due free agency or contracts.

Cams also not just a franchise quarterback, hes a very marketable face of the franchise and product companies.

He will get like an 6 year deal where they try to space out his cap number to 15 million or less for 4 years and have option bonuses, plan for restructuring because those last years will jump to 25-30 million dollar cap hits.

Thats like a Joe Flacco contract a couple years ago. Andy Dalton has a cap figure of around 10 milliom but it was a 6 year deal, 115 million just much less bonuses than joe flacco.

Even the Flacco deal works if Cam is happy getting around 30 million guaranteed and then having another 30 split in option bonuses to spread the cap out, salary only guaranteed in injury.

So people pooping their panties thinking we going to take a Drew Brees hit of 22 or Peyton 23 million or more per year can calm down.

I dont care if Cam gets 200 million, its about the cap so if its 15 million then we get to keep others and have a team.

Very incitful.... I'm glad we have posters like you that have a superior acumen for NFL talent and don't mind letting us know our QB is just as bad as he is good for our offense. Sure we are the first team to win back to back NFC South Division titles.....and yes we have gone to the playoffs in consecutive seasons for the first time in the history of the franchise but aside from all that.....Cam Sucks. Gotcha!!

Bus Cook will want a blank check. And Gettleman's ass is grass if he doesn't comply.

Nah.  I am not even sure that Gettlemen thinks Cam is a franchise qb.  What fans think doesn't matter.  But I assure you that DG will not throw this team back into cap hell by overpaying Cam, whose stats were pretty average this year.

He will pay Luke Kuechly a chunk of change because he has demonstrated that he is the best at his position.  Cam, when it gets to the negotiating table, really has very little to throw on it to justify a blank check.

There are many on here who refuse to acknowledge his shortcomings -- they blame everything and everyone else.under the sun.  Cam is a good athlete with incredible upside, but he has never really been in the top 10 and, unless he fixes his mechanics, will never be more than he is.  David Gettlemen is not going to pay for flash and potential.  He is going to analyze Cam's production and if potential comes into the discussion, he will analyze his coachability and upside.

While Cam may not be consistent, I assure you that Gettlemen has been and will be.  He is not overpaying for players.  Period.  He understands the QB market and how hard it is to find a good QB.  However, Cam is not holding all the cards.  People who think so are fooling themselves.  Cam will get an incentive-laden deal if he plays the potential card.  If he plays the production card, he gets a deal far less than the elite qbs.  So, if Cam is to become great, he will have to take a deal with more incentives and less guaranteed money.  If he does not want to do that, why should Gettlemen bet on his upside if Cam won't?

This team is poised to make a run, and I am pretty sure that Cam wants to be here. The great ones, right or wrong, are measured by wins and losses and (ultimately)  Karats more than rushing and passing yards.  We will add a weapon at WR and a T this offseason.  Cam will feel good about his chances here.

    • fuging Christ dude this isnt hard.  Like at all.  I get you simping for this poo team is your thing but sometimes you have to look at reality.   Even removing his bum knee from the equation, none of this made sense.  He is 31.  He has been paid handsomely for his service here.  He was currently under contract for this season.  Why in the holy fug did anything have to be done 2 weeks before the season started.   The people for this move, in this thread are saying A) He deserved it (this is the nfl it doesnt work like that  B) It frees up cap space (then why in the fug didnt we do this in Feb or C) You logic (We are getting a deal at 53 million guaranteed for the next 3 years.   You realize with this deal we cannot cut or trade his ass for 3 years.  You understand this right?   So in my opinion we should have let this ride into the offseason and go from there, what he is going to threaten to walk, big fuging deal he would be 32 on a chronically bad knee, what other moronic franchise is going to give him 40 million up front?  It wasnt going to happen.   And you are acting like its impossible to replace a 32 year old RT with a bum knee.  Just go and draft someone, move Icky to RT.  There are tons of options instead of extending this dude 2 weeks before the fuging season.  The truth is Morgan and the shitheads in the FO fell for this dudes crying act and got all sentimental and shelled out another ext.  We are a poverty ass franchise that doesnt act professionally
    • Amazing what the prospect of being traded to Carolina will do for contract negotiations.
    • 5 Im glad football is back but after the embarrassment that was the browns pre season game where our starting D made Sanders look like a serviceable NFL QB, I lost hope again for a successful Panthers campaign this year.  I do hope I’m wrong!
