RELEASE:

DeAngelo Williams (June 1st cut)

Thomas DeCoud

***I'm keeping Roman Harper for the time being, but he would be on the bubble in camp/preseason. Same goes for Jericho Cotchery. Just depends on how the young guys look and how the competition shakes out.***

CONTRACT EXTENSIONS:

Greg Olsen (4-years)

Thomas Davis (4-years)

------------------------

FREE AGENCY:

Doug Free, OT, Cowboys

Free.jpg

Here's what I like about Doug Free: he gives us flexibility. He's best suited for right tackle, but he can and has played left tackle effectively before as well. We sign him with the intention of starting him at right tackle and getting our future left tackle in the draft. If things go well and we get that tackle in the draft, we'll be set. If we can't land a tackle who can start day 1, we slide Free over to the left and go with Remmers at right tackle.

Jabaal Sheard, DE, Browns

Jabaal Sheard has been miscast somewhat as a 3-4 OLB, but he is better suited to play in a 4-3 as evidenced by his play early in his career. With Greg Hardy likely gone, we bring in Sheard to start opposite Charles Johnson and continue to develop Kony Ealy. We know Gettleman likes a deep DE rotation so I fully expect us to add one either in free agency or early in the draft.

Brandon Tate, WR/KR, Bengals

Jeremy mentioned that he's heard things about Tate and I hope that's true. He'd be a solid upgrade at WR and give us a big upgrade on special teams in the return game. No more Bersin returning punts in playoff games!

Jeron Johnson, SS, Seahawks

jeronjohnson.jpg?w=300&h=300

Johnson has never really gotten a chance to play a ton in Seattle due to the talent in their secondary, but he could be a nice addition for relatively cheap to compete with Roman Harper. Plus, when we play the Seahawks again, it wouldn't hurt to have someone who has played for them the last few years on our side.

Davon House, CB, Packers

Davon+House+Oakland+Raiders+v+Green+Bay+

I think Davon House could be a solid bargain signing for us. He's got special teams value and has flashed enough ability at times in Green Bay that we could take a flyer on him and hope we get more than just a special teamer.

Corey Peters, DT, Falcons

If we can't or don't re-sign Dwan Edwards I think adding a veteran guy like Corey Peters to the DT rotation would be a solid pickup.

NFL DRAFT:

NOTE: I wasn't sure how many comp. picks we're getting, so I went with the best projections I could find.

1st: Sammie Coates, WR, Auburn

Coates has size and speed. He's raw, but you get this guy coached up under Ricky Proehl and put him beside Kelvin Benjamin and we could have something special on our hands.

2nd: Tyler Sambrailo, OT, Colorado State

Back to the versatility that Doug Free would bring us, we could see how well suited Sambrailo is for left tackle and if he needs some time to ease in, put him on the right side. I think he can be our long-term answer at LT, though.

3rd: Durell Eskridge, S, Syracuse

More competition at safety and hopefully someone who can be a long-term part of our defense.

4th: Javorius "Buck" Allen, RB, USC

We'll need to add some RB depth in the mid-rounds and Buck Allen would, IMO, be a solid addition as a backup to Stewart now and possible starter if all goes well later.

5th: Gabe Wright, DT, Auburn

We know Gettleman loves his DL and Gabe Wright has some pass rush ability, even if he's inconsistent. Sounds a bit like Kawaan Short coming out 2 years ago.

5th (COMP): Deon Barnes, DE, Penn State

More depth and another young piece to the DE rotation.

6th: Martrell Spaight, OLB, Arkansas

Spaight is a guy I really like. He might not be ready day one, but if we can develop him a little he could be a future starter for us, or at least solid depth.

6th (COMP): Christian Lombard, OG, Notre Dame

A late-round flyer on a solid run-blocking guard.

7th: Dallas Lewallen, C, Wisconsin

There's been talk of Ryan Kalil being cut. I don't see it happening, but it never hurts to add depth and at this point center is our thinnest position depth-wise.

I see us signing a CB and DT this offseason. The SS Johnson from the Seahawks is interesting. Could he be a good player that's just stuck behind an all pro? I just believe he may cost more because he played for a team that went to two superbowls and the top defense for the past few years.

Sheard would be great but I wouldn't be surprised if we went with our current DEs with Alexander and Johnson starting.

I hate the Coates pick. He is too raw and drops passes.

    • I mean I'd like to add a monster TE as much as anyone else but ultimately what use will that serve with a QB who had 54 passing yards in 4 quarters at one point last season? Defense defense defense.
    • Personally I think he's a nightmare to cover I think linebackers generally aren't fast enough to keep up with him in coverage and cornerbacks don't have the strength to tackle him one-on-one in physically bring them down which would normally lead to a broken tackle or a nasty stiff arm or just bully ball play sure you could find a receiver with comparable speed like Cooper but he's faster than Cooper sure you can find a wide receiver that is the same size but he's probably More powerful than them and a better blocker.  The size speed athleticism package that he is in is completely unique it's easier to say I'd rather have just a big blocker because we've never seen this type of profile before I'm a risk taker I think you would be God blessed if this was there at 19 I think if you can get a guy that's a tight end who immediately becomes the fastest guy on your offense and at the same time that third wide receiver that can stretch and burn defenses over the top that's the perfect what the Panthers need type weapon.
    • I think you're under selling Sadiq. They are two different players in terms of how they win. Loveland is 2 inches taller maybe 5-6 pounds heavier. Comparing his speed to sadiq.. well your comparing a 4.7 guy to a 4.3 guy I'm seeing a guy that can take a bubble screen from the tight end position and turn it into a house call. I'm not saying the guy is a certified home run pick but I don't think there's really a president's for a comparison for this kind of athlete. It's easy to say this doesn't look like Warren or Loveland because we haven't seen guys that fit this profile The closest you might be able to get is Vernon Davis.  He's not as sure far as those guys were but at 19 I think almost everybody is going to have some warts and he's a lottery ticket of could be top 10 in the draft player or could fail I am more of a risk taker I think he fits the athletic profile that could be a homerun, like I said he's almost 40 lb bigger than Cooper and like 4-5 in taller than Cooper so and he's faster. So whatever you think Cooper gives you I think he does that and more. If you want to go with one of the office alignment I can understand that as well but for value as a receiving threat I don't think there's a bigger value at number 19.
