Justin Coleman, CB Tennessee

According to WalterFootball we've met with Justin twice and have exchanged phone numbers with him. He's listed as a possible late round pick and could be a "diamond in the rough."

 

Here's a brief overview of his 4 year career at Tennessee:

 

Coleman (5­'10", 188) was a 4-year contributor for the Volunteers who broke into the starting lineup as a freshman. He locked down a starting job in 2013 and recorded 59 tackles with three passes broken up. Coleman had 46 tackles, seven breakups, and an interception as a junior. In his senior campaign, he totaled 42 stops with five passes broken up and four interceptions. Coleman went on to have a solid week at the East­West Shrine to earn some consideration as a late­rounder.

Another cornerback who played well on Wednesday was Tennessee’s Justin Coleman. Coleman provided the blemish on McBride’s week during the team scrimmage. McBride caught a short cross and as he started to run with the ball, Coleman smacked the ball out for a fumble. Coleman did well in the one-on-ones and showed better on Wednesday than he had earlier in the week.

I know there is at least one Vols fan on this board. Does anyone who has maybe seen any games have any thoughts on Justin as a late-rounder or maybe even a UDFA?

Coleman started four games at corner as a freshman, nine in 2012 as a sophomore and all 12 games as a junior and he finished fifth on the team in tackles and second in pass breakups. As a senior, they moved him to the nickel spot, where Tennessee struggled mightily the season before when it rotated between former walk-on tailback JaRon Toney and freshman walk-on Devaun Swafford.

"He's going through a learning curve again right now, obviously, moving from corner, from an outside guy, to now a nickel and inside guy."

Great play by Justin Coleman on the quick slant. Coleman

has made a huge difference playing the nickel this year

instead of outside.

East coach Mike Singletary first mentioned Tennessee senior CB Justin Coleman when asked which players had impressed him the most at the Shrine Game.

"The week was an excellent test for Coleman. He was forced to match up with receivers in tight man coverage more often than he did for the Vols. Coleman excelled in those drills. He also showcased excellent ball skills"

We are looking for a nickle corner so no surprise if we draft him.

Yeah, sounds like a guy that would project as a nickel or dime guy.  We need both, assuming we're going to leave Bene on the outside which considering how well he played down the stretch would suit me just fine.  I know he projects more as a nickel himself, but the guy more than held his own on the outside as a rookie.  I have no issue with him continuing to play there.

The WRs at the EW Shrine game said that Coleman was the toughest DB.  That is what you want in a nickel.
