NFL Free Agency Update Thread

Mr. Scot

They need to release the Kraken already so he can get on with his life. WTF is the NFL waiting for?

Technically he is 'released'. They've made clear that the Exempt List does not prohibit him from signing a free agent contract.

I'll grant not knowing how long he'll be suspended might put some teams off, but apparently not the Raiders.

Saints & C.J. Spiller Have “Strong Mutual Interest”

mutual interests exists between free agent RB C.J. Spiller and the New Orleans Saints.

Spiller reportedly visited with the Saints on Thursday, but has also come up as a potential option for the Cowboys, who just lost DeMarco Murray to the Eagles.

New Orleans has shed some cap space through several moves, including TE Jimmy Graham to the Sehawks, so Spiller could serve as a solid complement to RB Mark Ingram.

Spiller, 27, was limited to appearing in nine games and rushing for 300 yards on 78 carries (3.8 YPC) to go along with 19 receptions for 125 yards receiving and one touchdown.

Redskins are signing former 49ers CB Chris Culliver to a four-year deal.

Culliver receives a four-year, $32 million contract from the Redskins

Previous reports had said that Culliver was likely to be one of the most sought after cornerbacks in this year’s market, but there had been a limited amount of buzz in recent days.

Culliver figures to be a solid addition for the Redskins, who could really use another cornerback in their secondary.

Culliver, 26, recorded 45 tackles, four interceptions, a forced fumble, a recovery, a defensive touchdown and 15 pass defenses for the 49ers in 2014. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 14 cornerback out of 108 qualifying players.

Titans have reached agreements with Derrick Morgan

Morgan's deal with the Titans is four years, $27 million base, with $3 million more in incentives, so $30 million max. $10.5m guaranteed.

Good gracious. Another overpayment.

Browns have interest in former Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe,  “strong interest.”

mentioned not too long ago that the Browns would at least explore the idea of signing Bowe, and he noted his ties to GM Ray Farmer.
former 49ers WR Stevie Johnson is also expected to be on their radar.

It’s worth mentioning that the Ravens and Patriots have also come up as speculative landing spots for Bowe.

Bowe, 30, had another three years remaining on his five-year, $56 million contract when he was released. The move freed up $5 million in cap space for the Chiefs.

In 2014, Bowe appeared in 15 games for the Chiefs and caught 60 passes for 754 yards receiving and no touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 45 receiver out of 110 qualifying players.

Stevie Brown is a guy that interests me a little bit.

I'd consider upgrading at Safety one of our Top 4 needs this offseason. His stock is low because he was coming off an injury last year, but he had some solid years before that, and according to rotoworld and a Giants fan I know, played pretty decent down the back stretch. Not an old player, has a connection to Gettleman. Is somebody I was hoping we'd show an interest in.

    • We’re in a pickle. My best hope is we protect him and can run the ball vs most Ds and the WRs are healthy so he has every chance to not look like what he looked like in too many games last year.
    • I'm really not stressing about upgrading from Bryce. I'm frustrated with our inability (or refusal) to recognize overall bad QB performance and failure to seriously address the issue. QB is the most impactful position on the field, and we're not only settling for what we've been given to this point, but we've rewarded it with a fully guaranteed 5th year extension for a player that's never played 2 NFL franchise QB quality games back to back in 3 seasons. I can't understand how that's ok from a coach's or GM's viewpoint. Successful franchises don't do things like this. It just doesn't make sense.  We do not have a top half of the league QB right now. Since we don't have that player, we should be looking for him. Pickett isn't it. Grier isn't it. Bryce hasn't proven he is yet. Until you have that sure fire franchise QB, you keep looking. You're not consistently making the playoffs, a deep run, or a SB appearance without one.  What's the worst that could happen? We end up with 2 potential number 1 QBs? How horrible.
    • Easy to understand Pickett, if this is anywhere close to on point. Canales wants to get as close to Bryce as he can- get the pace and timing in the throws as close a he can to Bryce. So the other players don’t have to adjust so much, to a new guy.       If Cam was the 1, he would look for a rocket arm.  But Bryce is the 1. Look for limited in the same way.  Low velocity, plenty of air under it, feels just like home when Picket comes in. And you have the guys on the second team not having such a radical adjustment (if they have to play) like with Dalton to Bryce.    Enter Grier. I guess we will collect those types.
