The British Open

It's Major time again and this year it's back at Old St. Andrews.

First of all I call it the British because only an arrogant wanker wouild refer to their Major simply as The Open.

That aside the major news of course is Rory tore up his ankle playing soccer and will not be defending his title.

It's a shame as it would have been fun to see Jordan Speith and Rory go at it.

So who ya got this week?

The word is the course is very green after much rain and scores could be very low.

Really wanted to go to this tourney... the British is the only major I haven't been to and going to St. Andrews would be so awesome.

I think Spieth has a real shot at this tourney, but as much as I'd like it, if he does win this week the pressure on him would be SO high to win the PGA I seriously doubt he can pull the grand slam.  Would love it tho...

I love The Open Championship. The Old Course is obviously iconic. Reading the same thing as KG, the course is going to play easy for these guys. Could see some super low scores.

I've picked Spieth in both majors thus far, but I'm having a hard time this week. I think he does well, but someone else takes it.

Henrik Stenson

I worry that playing the J Deere put Speith at a bit of a jet lag disadvantage.  Many of the guys went over a week earlier.  Course he is young and might not bother him at all.

Fowler did well this past weekend, but I think he will choke again.

Phil and Tiger, well, seems the game has passed them up

Dark Horse -- Sergio Garcia

I am pulling for Speith, but would not mind seeing Dustin Johnson pull it out with a clutch birdie put for some redemption.

Having Speith win the Grand slam could make for a historic year.

Serena could win the Grand Slam in tennis, Speith could win the Grand Slam in golf, and we already have a Triple Crown winner. Pretty amazing if you think about it.

Fowler does seem to be full of confidence though and could be big this week.

This is Tom Watson's last Open at St Andrews... you know, I wouldn't count him out the way he's played it the past few years... he's got 5 British Open wins, he knows how to play this course and if it's setup fairly easy and the players are scoring, old Tom might just have a shot...

If this course is soft and green it will give the field a chance to fire at pins..........

Which is not the game Tom wants to play. I'll be rooting for him but don't think he has a chance to win.

Hopefully he makes the cut.

I expect Watson to be towards the top a day or two. Tough for him to keep it up 4 straight days though.

    • The only WR that makes sense in the first is KC Concepcion. He fills multiple roles in the offense and is a PR specialist.
    • That depends upon what happens with receiver this year and what happens with free agency next year. Hopefully we'll be good by addressing receiver this year (regardless of whether we snag one in the first round or not). If we don't and are unlucky enough for to Coker get hurt (and X solidifies his bust status, and JAGs be JAGing), then we may be fùçked! But I assume that Dan Morgan and company will feel compelled to look for answers in free agency and use that to set up the draft just like this offseason.  Reality is not as simple as we drafted this position X times in a row in the first. If you're suggesting that we could draft a position in the first four times in a row, that's not likely. At some point probability has to be taken into account. I mean, how many years in a row can you be unlucky with one position?  As I've said at times before, you try and plan for the long term personnel-wise and cap-wise of course, but things happen so, in a sense, you still must look at each season--each "team" if you will--unto itself each season. So many things can happen between now and then. A major industry can profoundly impact the bigger picture (like this year), someone could offer you a trade proposal that you can't resist, players might not have progressed to your expectations--you know, things like that. Moreover, you have to be aware of the dynamics of each draft class, including the fact that there could be unexpected draft risers and fallers during the college season. That's a lot. As of today, we expect the 2027 draft to have more exclamations than question marks at OT and the QB class and WR group is expected to be exceptionally strong. We'll have a clearer picture of whatever we'll have to focus on next year at this time.  Lastly, keep in mind that there's always more than one way to get you to where you want to go. The yearly puzzle is not static, it's dynamic and complex.
    • I'm fine with Thieneman or McNeil-Warren.. Rodriguez won't last until 51 so they would have to trade up, he may end up being a late first round selection. Anthony Hill Jr. is more likely to be available. I don't expect defense in the first round now after the murmurings of finding another weapon for Bryce.
