Steve Smith

Did he not say that we 'needed' Steve Smith?

Yes he did. I said I didn't necessarily agree with him that we need it, but that your response had really nothing to do with what's being discussed. I don't think we NEED Smitty. But he would certainly help us on the field if we had him right now. And I'm not suggesting we should've kept him.

While he's injured?

Smith isn't exactly helping isn't exactly helping anybody right now.

I was thinking in terms of the season as a whole, and he's expected back next week or the week after at the latest. And we happen to have a bye this week so lets say he were here and injured, he probably wouldn't even have missed a game.

Since this will reportedly be Steves last year, and Baltimore is a dumpster fire, why not bring him back to help the anemic WR core? Presumably Gettlemen thinks we can contend this year since we traded for Jared Allen, we could do the same for Smitty. At the very least he deserves a chance to play for a ring. Furtherore If he was cut because they wanted this to be Cams team, it definitely is now. Tampa didn't hesitant to bring back their kicker who they've cut twice now.

Just to make this short and sweet, I'd love to have Steve Smith back. But it will never happen. Period. Move on.

Brenton Bersin is arguably our best receiver, and everyone is looking at Steve like he'll come in here and make things worse?? This anti-Steve circle-jerk is baffling to me. If we can bring him back without giving up much, I would be ecstatic! Does anyone realize that the reason we can't run the ball is because our WR's (none of whom have eclipsed 100 yards in a game yet) aren't serviceable enough to demand any kind of attention?

I mean, this is his last chance to get a Super Bowl ring...if he came back to us and we went all the way? The world would drown in my semen.

Show some logic, Huddlers...

i wouldn't be so sure of that.

Smith is 36 years old, and even without a major injury he faded as last season wore on.

It's a shame that his career here ended the way it did, but the reality of the NFL is most guys don't get to go out the way they want to.

Of course nobody can be sure of it. But I don't think it was that major of an injury. If it was they would've ruled him out for this week's game well ahead of it. He was listed as doubtful yesterday. His age is really irrelevant. His level of play this year while healthy so far has been among the best in the league. Yes he will likely fade but even a fading 36 year old Smitty would be better than atleast one of our top 2-3 WRs. And he faded last year and still came on strong in the playoffs. He's a different animal in the playoffs and I certainly believe he could help us. I know it won't happen and I'm not even sure it would be worth giving up something to get him and paying him what he's making (which isn't that much, but still) but if we could just add him to the team right now for nothing, he would help us.

No way in hell I'd trade anything for him. And I really can't see the Ravens cutting him.

As has been said,  this is a moot discussion.

I wouldn't trade more than a 6th but a late round like that wouldn't be much of a risk and could have a big reward. But as I've said before there's no way it happens, so yes no point in discussing.

I'd like to think this discussion has come to a rational end...however there will be a thread next week.

For the record if I see someone's first post on the board and they have no pie...I will give them pie...regardless of what they say. I believe in positive reinforcement at a young age. Life will beat them down soon enough.

    • The only WR that makes sense in the first is KC Concepcion. He fills multiple roles in the offense and is a PR specialist.
    • That depends upon what happens with receiver this year and what happens with free agency next year. Hopefully we'll be good by addressing receiver this year (regardless of whether we snag one in the first round or not). If we don't and are unlucky enough for to Coker get hurt (and X solidifies his bust status, and JAGs be JAGing), then we may be fùçked! But I assume that Dan Morgan and company will feel compelled to look for answers in free agency and use that to set up the draft just like this offseason.  Reality is not as simple as we drafted this position X times in a row in the first. If you're suggesting that we could draft a position in the first four times in a row, that's not likely. At some point probability has to be taken into account. I mean, how many years in a row can you be unlucky with one position?  As I've said at times before, you try and plan for the long term personnel-wise and cap-wise of course, but things happen so, in a sense, you still must look at each season--each "team" if you will--unto itself each season. So many things can happen between now and then. A major industry can profoundly impact the bigger picture (like this year), someone could offer you a trade proposal that you can't resist, players might not have progressed to your expectations--you know, things like that. Moreover, you have to be aware of the dynamics of each draft class, including the fact that there could be unexpected draft risers and fallers during the college season. That's a lot. As of today, we expect the 2027 draft to have more exclamations than question marks at OT and the QB class and WR group is expected to be exceptionally strong. We'll have a clearer picture of whatever we'll have to focus on next year at this time.  Lastly, keep in mind that there's always more than one way to get you to where you want to go. The yearly puzzle is not static, it's dynamic and complex.
    • I'm fine with Thieneman or McNeil-Warren.. Rodriguez won't last until 51 so they would have to trade up, he may end up being a late first round selection. Anthony Hill Jr. is more likely to be available. I don't expect defense in the first round now after the murmurings of finding another weapon for Bryce.
