That Crazy Joe Web Wildcat Play

Very nice analysis of the play call and what went wrong over at C-S-R

Here's an excerpt:

Unfortunately, left tackle Michael Oher is completely driven back by the Packers' defensive end. As a result, Joe Webb suddenly stops following his lead blocker Silatolu, and tries cutting up the field. This is a terrible decision by Webb. Despite Oher giving up some ground, Webb should have continued running towards the bottom of the formation, following his lead blocker Silatolu. Notice all the space at the bottom of the formation. If Greg Olsen and Philly Brown can hold their blocks, and if Silatolu is able to take out the safety further down the field, this could have been a solid gain, and potentially even a touchdown.

Look at the size difference on Cam and whoever has him at the top of the screen. That is a match up nightmare.

I think Cam was thinking about this play when he joked about how good his hands are in his presser. He had probably just watched it on film earlier in the day and made the typical wide receiver "look I was open" comment. He had a twinkle in his eye talking about how good his hands are.

As far as the getting hit comments. I would rather him get hit by safeties and corners over DL and linebackers. This is actually a safer play for Cam than the norm and its a penalty if they take him out past 5 yards.

I was pissed at the call when it happened but looking at the design actually look forward to seeing what they do with it moving forward.

That was the worst call at the worst possible moment against a stellar team.  Right up there , with an end around that we had run in previous games and GB clearly looking for it in our own territory.

pamthers don't blow out teams and do not need, and can't afford, to get too cute.  Had they scored a TD or even a field goal on that wasted sequence the ending could have been a lot less stressful

should throw both plays away for a very very long time

It is just a poor design.   Webb is your 3rd string QB.  Not a RB.   Therefore the play doesn't present a heavy run look to actually open up the pass to Cam.

So you basically downgrade at QB and WR....as your "trick".

I wouldn't call it poor design. GB bit on the Ginn jet motion. Poor execution yes. It was never designed as an option pass. Webb is supposed to run left where they had numbers. I am fine with Webb running it. He is pretty good in space and is already returning Kick offs.. I bet we see it a few more times every couple of games as a designed run.  If they break off a good run out of it that's when they might come back to it with a pass option. Maybe against Dallas on a short week where the D doesn't have as much time to prepare.
