Excellent Scott Fowler Q&A with Jared Allen

Really like Jared Allen, and really like the article (Q&A) Scott Fowler has written for the Observer.   It's really interesting to hear a veteran like Allen talk about our team and the locker room and what's special this season.

Q. What’s the best team you have been on for an entire season and how does this Carolina team compare?

A. Minnesota in 2009. We lost to the Saints in the NFC Championship Game, in overtime.

Now this Carolina team is good. Can we go all the way? Let’s put it this way – we have the potential to go as far as we want to go. That’s not a cop-out. This league is week-to-week, a “who’s hot, who’s not” type of league. This team is special in terms of the camaraderie in the locker room. Guys genuinely get along.

There’s a competitive spirit, and every individual wants to be great, but it’s more about the team than the individual. That starts with our captains.

Like Thomas Davis, here’s a guy I’ve seen on film for a lot of years and now I get to kind of see what’s behind him. He’s always out making plays. He doesn’t have the accolades he should, but he just keeps doing it. It’s never about him.

Getting to see how Luke (Kuechly) plays, how he pushes for everyone to get better and tries to raise everybody’s level. It’s impressive.

But you have to stay focused. In 2009 with the Vikings, we let a couple slip away – games we should have won. And that meant we lost homefield advantage in the playoffs and had to play New Orleans on the road. And that may have changed the outcome of everything. Coach Rivera does a great job of reminding us to stay in the present. Every game counts for something.

He's worth his salary for his attitude and leadership alone.  I would love to see him back next year but it may not make sense financially.

It really amazes me how seamlessly Allen seems to have fit in to the team and how he already sounds like he's been a Panther for ages.  It was excellent to see him carry the flag last week in the Salute to Service game, recognizing the work he does with Wounded Warriers, but it caught me off guard a bit given how new he is to the team.  I had to remind myself he IS new to the team. 

Smitty sometimes trots out the line "Born to be a Raven" these days.  Allen seems like he was "born to be a Panther."  Gettlemagic once again.

I don't know about that yet.  Allen is on the last few years and somehow I think he might stay here for a cap friendly deal.  He's gotten paid plenty and while I would not blame him to go with the highest bidder, I think he might stick here if he thinks we are going to be contenders again next year.  This will be good conversation for late February though.

If we win it all, he is gone.  If we come ever so close, he will be back for next to nothing.  2015 is our "We just might" year, 2016 is our "The belt is ours" year.

Jared Allen was my favorite non Panther for a while, and as a service member, seeing what he does for our men and women who are currently deployed or have come home is special to me.  He has a younger brother on active duty in the Marine Corps, and I think his grandfather also served.  To me it makes perfect sense why, even as a new Panther, he carried our flag onto the field.  Keep Pounding.

I absolutely agree.  I hope nothing I wrote implied otherwise.  He and Charles Tillman do TONS to support vets & those serving.  I think they've both been recognized with Salute to Service awards (Allen won in 2014, Tillman in 2012), so giving them the honor of carrying the flags last week was a no brainer.  I'm just so glad they're both Panthers now.  They are tremendous additions to our team given their leadership and great skills & knowledge to pass on to the young guys.

Wow I love our team.  Not only do we have guys winning awards their play, but we've got two Walter Peyton award winners (Davis & Tillman) and two Salute to Service award winners (Allen & Tillman)...

Now we just need the Lombardi to make it perfect.

it may be just be me, but since Allen arrived, Kony Ealy has played better.  If hes taken the kid under his wing  or just helping with his confidence  I dont know but whatever it is, its working.
