Cam for MVP, debunking statistical assumptions

Eli has 106 more attempts than Cam, that's the equivalent of 3 games worth of attempts. I'm pretty sure Cam could manage a measly 600 yards in 3 games and some TDs. Fail!

Also have to take in consideration how many minutes Cam has set out in the games he was pulled?

One of the biggest reasons (if not the MAIN one) that Cam's stats aren't as much as they could be, is Rivera.

It's that, and the receivers dropping passes (causing INT's and loss of yards and TD's), along with the three bad weather rain games this season.

Any time the Panthers get more than a two TD lead, the offense goes in cruise control mode, rarely throwing it much. This is why the team "rushes more than it passes". It's because, they're perfectly content to mostly run out the clock (no matter how early in the game) when they have sizable leads.

This is what the stats geeks don't see (and why they're wrong). And even articles like this-effectively praising the Panthers, don't note this in their points of arguments. Savvy Panther fans know this clearly!.

You don't have to bring rushing into it to win a Cam Newton MVP argument as well. That's a Cop Out IMO.  He's as good a pure QB's as those other guys this year. It's almost as if you're deferring. Stating: "Hey, but look at his rushing yards" to compensate. Instead, Just mention his loss of yards and TD's, due to dropped passes, poor weather games, and Rivera repeatedly shutting down the offense with 2+ TD leads. That's your real answer.

Just look at Cam last week, compared to R. Wilson demonstrating this. The offense basically shut down after the first half, (really 1st Qtr) with Cam removed by the start 4th Qtr. R. Wilson was in his game deep into the 4th Qtr, piling up meaningless stats against an over matched opponent.....Bingo!

But you're making it sound like its the best QB award. It isn't. It's the MVP and running most certainly factors into it. It's an integral part not just because of his stats but also the threat of running and the manner in which he does it.

Most "running" QBs are really scrambling QBs. While Cam can scramble, it's the designed power runs that set him apart. Not including all of that simply cowtows to the narrative that QBs should be judged by passing stats alone.

I got you. And I know what you're saying, especially how it pertains to the MVP, Team argument.

Agreed.

However, I said what I said; because they're many folks who don't realize Cam's a Pocket QB (as you noted), having a great passing year; as opposed to a "running QB" compensating in other ways by running. The man is a 100% Pocket passer.

In other words; before we get into his other things (like his running), let's firmly establish his QB, Pocket credentials. And I think he can beat those folks/win an argument (even on their terms) on QB skills-performance alone. That's my point.

Some of those "other guys" don't factor in rushing yards or care (though the threat of the run, certainly opens up the offense, and makes Cam more dangerous to defend-beyond statistics) when discussing a QB BTW; even for MVP. Remember that (though, I got you indeed)!?

    • I definitely respect your opinion more than Tracy McGrady, Vince Carter, and Carmelo Anthony (whom I just watched on their show, all saying NOBODY wants to get the Hornets in the post-season). You win.
    • For all the good feelings about Bryce Young, when you read between the lines, it's what DC says and doesn't say that makes us know that Bryce hasn't necessarily been the supercomputer that they thought he would be. This season, Bryce has to make a tangible progression on the field. "A big part of it is being able to operate at the line of scrimmage — not in the huddle — when we want to, and he’s certainly capable of that," Canales said about Young. "It’s not solely on him. It’s a group that’s pretty young. You have to trust all the guys to go up there, communicate verbally or nonverbally and execute what we’re doing. We’ve made huge strides in that regard. His ability to alter things based on what they’re giving you will give us another edge, which he’s continued to grow and had some great examples down the stretch where he identified things they were doing, got us to the right check and capitalized on some plays. Want to see him do that more when it’s appropriate. We don’t need to be changing things just to change it." The implications, perhaps insinuations, are pretty evident. Bryce is just going to have to do better. "And then for Bryce, it’s the identification of early on the cues that the defense are giving us, to be able to eliminate parts of your progression before the ball’s even snapped. That happens with time. I’ve seen quarterbacks really own and master, which allows them to play lightning fast." Obviously Bryce isn't necessarily picking things up as fast as Canales would like, and I can only assume that Canales is making comparisons to Russell Wilson, Geno Smith and Baker Mayfield. But, of course, not everyone picks things up at the same rate. Bryce's pace has left Canales wanting for more. During the coming season, I don't believe that it will be good enough for Bryce to start putting things together in December, evidence of the light switch being on is going to have to show itself in September. Basically, it's really the moment that we've all been waiting for, the one that we thought should've happened earlier, the one that brings Bryce's accountability in the spotlight. On an off note, perhaps to that end, we should consider the possible implications upon the draft, but that's another story. Basically, it's time for Bryce to sh¡t or get off the pot. https://roundtable.io/sports/nfl/panthers/news/carolina-panthers-dave-canales-holds-nothing-back-on-bryce-young-in-new-interview
