Year-end version.  Cam ends up as expected.

On to the rankings! This ranking is based on 2015 regular season play only.

Best of the Best

1. Cam Newton (14)
2. Carson Palmer (N/A)
3. Tom Brady (4)
4. Russell Wilson (8)
5. Ben Roethlisberger (5)

Newton's accuracy was the key to his season. After a so-so September, he didn't experience the cold streaks with his passing that plagued previous years. He completes more contested throws up the seams than any quarterback because the ball gets there too fast for defenders to react. Throw in the most value as a runner in the league and the ability to make his teammates better, and Newton narrowly edges out Palmer's career year.

(The # in parentheses is the position they started the year off in Rosenthal's rankings.)

The N/A guys like Cousins, Fitzpatrick, Taylor, and especially Palmer (and Cam going from 14 to 1) are proof that QB's are more difficult to judge than other positions, and the supporting cast, as well as the coaching staff and philosophy, can make a huge difference in performance.

We also have to remember with Cam; he had an injury riddled year, coupled with wholesale changes to the team. However, national media never gives Cam those Mulligans/benefits of the doubts.

So Newton should have never been ranked 14 to begin with.

The "so-so" September narrative is also clueless and/or lazy.  To be frank, if I weren't a Panthers, Jaguars, Texans, or Saints fan, I wouldn't have wanted to watch those games either.

But how about this drop by Ginn against Jax http://ftw.usatoday.com/2015/09/ted-ginn-dropped-the-easiest-wide-open-touchdown-pass

or Olsen's BS offensive PI call taking a TD off the board?  Or the 8+ minute 4th quarter FG drive when we were trying to...take up clock and kick a FG.

The INT against the Texans was off the hands of Norwood on the goal line and the flip was the play of the year.

The Saints game he was spectacular, far from so-so.

People with a clue had him in the top 3-5 of the MVP race from the start.

Whatever.

We've all been there at some point in life, whether real life or sports fandom.  Not wanting what your eyeballs and the facts are telling you to be true is true, but it's true.  So it must be with the haters.

None of it matters if we dont hoist the Lombardi trophy. Yes as fans we can revel in the accolades for our beloved QB. But I'm glad Thomas Davis said it the other day. This team needs to keep focused on the ultimate goal, or individual accolades and 15-1 won't matter a rip.

That's silly, of course things like this matter.  The vast majority of human beings appreciate complimentary recognition and find it important.

And OF COURSE winning championships are the *most* important thing to athletes.  But saying that something is the most important does not mean that other things are never important.  That's just lazy logic and denial of reality.

Oh I know all that. I was just saying that, for now, the Championship is what they should focus on. There will be plenty of time in the offseason to revel in individual accomplishments.

That is the main thing about this time of year. Can your TEAM keep the focus on what IS important? All teams say they can/do. But we all know the reality is quite different. What we as Panther fans can take to the bank is that our TEAM will not lose focus. The accolades are nice and all. But they have nothing to do with the actual playing of the football game.

At this point in time. The accolades mean more to us fans than they do to the majority of NFL players. Or should. If you are a player and you are obsessed with not making the Pro Bowl/All Pro. You are not in the position to help your team. Those player exist. Just not on this team. Thankfully.

I'm still gonna be a nervous wreck on January 17th. It's time for this team to make a statement that no one can take from them or discount. The only thing that will do that is to bring the Lombardi to Charlotte.

It's our time. Let's go Panthers!

Ain't sports the pip? No matter how you feel, the nerves come with the territory on game day. 15-1 and still worried.

The one thought no one can take away. Even if, Zod forbid, we don't win it all this year. We are set up for a serious run of attempts. With Cam, Rivera, Gman in place. We are good to go for the foreseeable future.
