Forced TO before play clock expired

I’m sure this was probably discussed in the game day thread, but what was that BS with forcing us to take a timeout because the ref was standing over the ball with the play clock about to run out? Luckily in that game wasting a TO was no big deal, but next time it might be.

I realize that sometimes the play clock doesn’t get reset when it should, but the refs have to recognize that and correct the situation. As Cam was pleading his case they were basically like “fug you, we don’t care if it’s our mistake that you couldn’t snap the ball.”

Maybe I'm off base and totally misread the situation, but that’s what it looked like to me.

We subbed late so the refs stand over the ball to prevent the snap in order to allow Arizona the opportunity to sub as well. Happened in another game at the end of the year. I want to say it was against the Bucs. It's the right call.

Clarification: The time it happened previously we were trying to run a hurry up play to snap it after a long questionable catch(Philly I think) so the other team couldn't challenge but we had subbed so the other team subbed as well and it gave them time to check the replay. Cam was hot about that too, but it was the right call then as well.

We weren't really doing a hurry-up because the play clock ran all the way out.  The frustrating thing is that Arizona seemed to be intentionally delaying their substitution to run our play clock down.  The officials are supposed to give a "reasonable amount of time" for the defense to substitute, but Arizona had guys jogging on and off and back on looking like they didn't know who was supposed to be on the field, which was probably intentional.  It seemed to take more than 10 seconds off the play clock, and that is way too long for a "reasonable" substitution.

    • I have considered free agency.  LT?  Either not good enough or too expensive.  Besides, this is a good OT draft.  (I would rather have a free agent, mind you, but the Panthers' reality suggests we can't do it without neglecting other positions).  What LTs are available in free agency, and what do you expect to pay?  Any Ickey-level OT is going to cost over $20m.   How much do we already have invested in our OL?  I get your point, but I do not think you can spend over $100m per on your OL. We have 2 guards and a right T who pull in about $75m per season.  We don't have a center yet.  Teams just don't let good LTs hit free agency, and when one does on rare occasion, he is expensive.  If you want a third of the Panther cap going to 5 Offensive Linemen, free agency is the way to go.  We still need S, ILB, Edge, WR, etc. I think we'd need more than Nijman--and I would understand if we went free agent for a T--but that is putting a TON of your cap at OL--so considering our situation, I do not see that option as preferable.  You may disagree. If I was not talking LT on our line and thinking about the cap, I would agree 100%.
    • Will be interesting to see how they come out tonight. The Boston game seemed to open the flood gates of media attention. And it’s not just that they’re playing well, in some instances they are getting compared with all time greats. This is still a young team, and it would be easy for an immature team to lose some focus, buy into their own hype, and think they can coast bit. The Heat are a middle of the road team without their leading scorer. There is no big dragon to slay, no big statement to make. I think we’ll learn a lot tonight: are they young but mature, or do they still have a ways to go mentally?
    • Panthers North for the win. Good luck to him. Great guy, hated to see him leave here, but he's about to work with the best QB he's ever worked with (at least on a regular basis).
