Bill Barnwell: Panthers' patience should be rewarded

Having won three consecutive NFC South titles without being able to invest heavily in free agency, you can understand why Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman might not be desperate to hop in now that he finally has some cash to work with. Carolina has $20 million in cap space, but the Panthers have stayed frugal during the free-agency period. They pulled off one of the best moves of the offseason by cutting Charles Johnson and re-signing him, saving $8.8 million in the process.

Given that Carolina came within one win of a Super Bowl title last year, it's reasonable enough to remain conservative in free agency. The Panthers were reportedly interested in Eric Weddle before he signed with the Ravens, and with Roman Harper a free agent, the Panthers could target a veteran safety to play alongside Kurt Coleman. Likewise, with Jerricho Cotchery a free agent, a veteran wideout who can go over the middle and help out as a blocker, such as Anquan Boldin, would make sense too. But these are the sorts of moves that smart teams make on April 15, not March 15.

    • You honestly think Tampa would have traded down with a division rival so their rival could land a “generational player” at a massive position of need for TB?   bruh
    • Ya'll better quit throwing shots at Zod. He'll come in here and ban everybody. I had a friend @prosource who was banned in 2015 because he said some very minor things about Zod being an ass to the posters on the main forum after starting the All-Pro one. He said he felt like another level is cool, but don't punch down on people that don't want All-Pro. (He did say that it wasn't going to last long anyways.🤔) I distinctly remember him calling and being like "dude, I got banned, my profile says I don't have access to the Huddle!") I feel like once Tepper came in and cut off all unofficial access to the team, Zod was going to be around less. The All-Pro board had really good photos, even in game stuff, and I remember seeing him behind a little fenced in area at Wofford for non team sanctioned press/photographers after Tepper bought the team. I knew then his ego wouldn't allow him to continue with past fervency and effort with that reduction in access. Dude was literally in the locker room when JR was owner.  I came over in 2011 immediately after finding out this place existed. I was super involved with the Charlotte forum, and fell off after its demise. I will never forget arguing Pep over Ryan Sims on that forum! Who is Ryan Sims some of you may ask? My answer is exactly!
    • And not see him running free. Because has been free a lot more than he gets credit for.    Now what XL does with that when he does see the ball, is on him.
