Should the Panthers do more 4 and 5 wide out sets

I know that the panthers is a running team first. But as we have seen in the past 2 games. Playoff and 1st game of the season combined. It seems these teams have found the answer to making Jake turn over the more. My question and solution to slowing down these teams pass rush is for the panthers to run more 4 and 5 WR sets to counter alot of these blitz. Also carolina needs to put Steve Smith in motion more in the 5 wide set and send him on more drag routes with the kind of speed he has. Also play him in the slot alot more like Pats do with Randy Moss. Carolina needs to find a way to get Jake going again. If that means doing more 4 and 5 wide sets. Then I say do it.:yesnod:

Jake is a play action pass QB. When we get down because of TOs, the threat of the run is no longer a factor. Jake usually does poorly when the opposing defense sees that we are in an obvious pass formation. If we send out 4 and 5 wide sets, how many of those recievers will Jake actually see? 1? 2? Joe Montana could check all 5, and then check them again. I think you would rather we had a west coast offense and a better QB, but we have a script we must stick to in order to win. Play action + no TOs.

The reason Jake is throwing all these picks is because he tries to force it to Smith. Jake usually has at least two or three more options on every pass play, with Dwill as one that should be used far more, and then a TE which they all showed in the preseason an ability to make plays when given the chance. No the problem lies in either Jakes (more likely) or Fox's obsession with Smith.

    • I don’t know about floor in a team defense sense but we needed more.  The floor that I am familiar with is our QBs floor and it is so low that every other part of the team needs to be beefed up.     We tried our best to improve these things and I think we did improve the defense and we at least kept the offense  from sinking from no LT.  And ostensibly helped the receivers too.   So we kept a window open that we at least have a chance to improve our record by a game of two.  Which would probably give us the division.

    • Yeah. I am one of. those who think a JAG RB can eat with really good blocking. (Brooks is most important in my mind, in tbe passing game and that is what we’ll lose without him)  There are a lot of aspects to this. The big one that caused us to struggle is Young and his arm scared no one.  Best back, best blocking still cannot defeat a really good defense if they are not forced to respect the pass.  And teams did not.    But, a strong OL and running game Can get us over against weaker defenses.  And if Bryce still doesn’t scare anyone we can still win some games. Like last year  So it is really important to tend to that OL.   Get that straight and see if in his fourth year he can finally back defenses off. That is what if is all about this year to me, on the Bryce front.
