Draft Pick Watch Thread: Chargers + Bengals

If we want the 7th pick, Chargers and Bengals must win.

Right now we're guaranteed the 9th pick.

Current scores:

Bengals 20-10 over Ravens

Chargers 10-17 under Chiefs

If you're looking for DE Derek Barnett, then a safe spot is to get ahead of the Bengals with a Bengals win.

If you're looking for S Jamal Adams, then a safe spot is getting ahead of the Chargers with a Chargers win.

If you're looking to snag RB D'onta Foreman in the second, just try and grab as much spots as possible. So ideally a Chargers win.

Bengals game is over.

Side note, God I hope the Falcons blow it against the Aints and the Seaturkeys as well. Give NFC North the bye please.

This thread got posted a lot later than anticipated. Had to quickly update the Chargers score.

We need a defensive end so bad

So tired of missing FGs, blowing blocks, dropping passes and throwing picks

Offseason healing will help Cam's accuracy.

A healthy line with Kalil will go right back up to help the blitz pickup.

Just an off-season for us. This draft is our best chance to retool/fire-up our offense and defense. First round would be the only round I see us getting a defensive player.

If chargers lose, I'm pretty sure we stay 8 because we beat the Chargers

I remember reading a chart saying they'll get the 8th pick if they win, and we get the 7th.

I assume they have a better divisional record than us then. They did win against the Broncos once, I'd assume they also beat another team.

Looks like tie is broken by strength of schedule first

Determination of Draft order for the 32 NFL teams is based on the record and playoff finish by each team in that year.

For the teams that did not make the playoffs, order is determined by overall season record, with the worst record picking first.

For the teams that made the playoffs, the rest of the picks are ordered by playoff record, with the teams that lose getting lower picks based on which round they were ousted and the Super Bowl winner getting the last pick.

For the playoff teams that got eliminated in the same round, their order is determined by regular season record.

Overall ties are then broken by strength of schedule, which is a calculation of the combined record of all of a team's opponents in that year, with divisional opponents counting twice.

The next tie breaker would be record against conference opponents and then divisional opponents.

Coin flip will occur if tie still exists

After the first round, the order is determined by revolving the teams with the same records, with the team that just picked first of the group picking last in the next round.

If there is an expansion team, that team will pick first, and if there are two expansion teams, they will flip a coin with one team getting the first pick in the draft and the other in the expansion draft of current players.

    • Me and you clearly have different definitions of production. If you remove the 2023 season where Thielen had just over 1k yards he is 43rd on our all time receivers list just ahead of Jonathan Mingo. And before you ask why would we remove that season? Well a couple reasons. For one thing we won a whopping 2 games. And for the biggest. Thielen was 14th in targets in 2023. We absolutely force fed him the ball all season and finished with the 32nd passing offense. For comparison sake 33 year old Jerricho Cotchery eclipsed over 1k total yards in just 2 more games and with 67 less targets than Thielen did in that 2023 season. He has above average hands. That's it. We overpaid him because we were desperate and overvalued him. That's the reality no matter how many times you or anyone else wants to quote me and get defensive about it.
    • He's played great and it was a win-win (rare free agent) for both parties.  One of the points is he hasn't made enough difference to "waste" 35 million on. Another point is by the time Panthers are hitting their prime, he would have taken snaps away from young WRs/TEs/RBs. "Thus" in the long term, hurting the teams new future "window."  But I dare think of the monkey poo of a offense the Panthers had without him the past 2 years. Lack of talent leads to many problems, including paying a 35 year old to be somewhat respectable. Hes one of few that cared enough and made a effort. Plus you know he's done great stuff in many other ways for the team, community juggernaut, leadership, etc.  Judgement is for AT and his 3 year panther career!!
    • But it has gotten a little wacky. RBs-https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/contracts/_/position/rb     A couple months ago iggles made Bark the highest guaranteed RB, jeanty was until then. That's what matters the guarantee. A rookie never played a down was the leader, until iggles howie made things right.  If a safety gets drafted in the top 8 or so, he would have the highest money too or very close to it.    Add in TEs and C too.    Even with the fixed %, the numbers are getting too much for a player that's not proven themselves.     Plus anytime a QB is drafted it screws up the contracts for players around and if next year a punter gets drafted at the same 90th spot, they want the same contract with the 5.7% increase. Teams would be laughing.    Its just reached this point. Another 10 years and I bet the vets will be crying.
