JJ Watt tells it like it is. Calls NFL Networks Top 100 list a complete joke.

It really is just a popularity contest amongst the players with actual production playing a minor role.  Definitely more name recognition and maybe the respect factor mixed in.  Although if NFL network wants anyone to take their off season filler countdown remotely serious, they need to say the players eligible to be ranked had to of at least played in 50% of the previous seasons games.

I don't think it's debatable that whether he was injured or not last season, he was/is one of the top defenders in the league. Which is why he was on the list.

Watt is just taking this stance to make himself more relatable/humble to fans.

whether he played or not last year, he is still the best defender until his surgically "repaired" back proves to not hold up

It's specifically  supposed to be based on play in the season of the rankings.

Unfortunately the players don't even understand the exact rules whether it's based on last season, body of work or future expectations. It's what they always seem to argue and debate over every year on their reaction shows. Last year Peyton and Marshawn got enough votes to be in the 40s or something and they had take them off the list due to being retired. Peyton was fresh off one of the worst individual performances of all time, as well as everyone knew he was done, so the rules are really vague.

Well said.

Is Kuechly the only 1 we have left on the list?  I mean I'm assuming he's still there if Watt still made the list.

    • well, players dictating things only works if you have the right collection of players to dictate things.  and in all honesty, not sure if we can answer if we do or don't as fans given......there are no Thomas Davis types around that we know are actually about X and Y (based on years showing it).  Collective team is too new to us to know what these dudes are really about in terms of players carrying the burden of culture.
    • Moore can be put in one of the vet spots on IR. No one will be checking for him at the start of the season. But I would be very perturbed if we tried to go all Gettlemagic and stash an obvious talent like Horn on practice squad like we did Butker. If we can get through this year, next year it will be obvious Moore and AT will be gone, starting namely with AT's contract.
    • Culture change comes from the top down, not from drafting a 3 and no D guard. I doubt Lamelo is gonna take his cues from this 20yr old kid lol. If Brandon Miller couldn’t change the culture with how good he is and how much he hustles on both ends, Kon Knueppel sure as hell ain’t changing it. Ace Bailey by all accounts is also a great teammate and hard worker, btw, who was drafted by a team he supposedly didn’t want to go to yet he immediately bought in. And he’s got actual length and tools on both ends of the floor. I feel this pick is going to age like milk rather quickly.
