Two IR players can return mid season

How I understand the rule, you must be on the regular season roster prior to being placed on IR for that to be applicable. If you are placed on preseason IR you are ineligible to come back, otherwise you would go on the pup.

Teams don't have to designate which two in advance of the 53 cut down article according to this.

What you say is how I initially understood that article on the IR rules too.  It's not very clear.  But after lots of discussion on Twitter today, I got what seem to be two very CLEAR and DEFINITIVE replies to the contrary, that NO, guys sent to IR before final 53 are NOT eligible:

Correct about not needing to pre-designate.

But apparently the rule is that the player must first make the 53, even though that rule is NOT explained online anywhere that I can find.   Wish it were otherwise.
