Which path for Newton?

The point....is you can get injured on the football field at any time, at any place.

You are going to get hit more when you run than when you pass, that's just how it goes, and the cumulative effect of those hits on Cam are showing up more rapidly than 5 years ago.

He needs to be able to run, and he always will be, but Ron and Shula need to cut down on how much they expose Cam.

See, that is the rub. Some folks think Cam is safer when he runs, and gets walloped in the pocket. Others feel Cam gets clobbered when he runs, and needs to limit those runs going forward.

Cam has always been sneaky when he runs. He has always had a knack of knowing exactly when to get down. And outside of a handful of plays has been relatively safe while running.

Almost every shot to the head on Cam has come behind the line of scrimmage. Take out those shots to the head. And I bet we are not having this conversation.

He's already slowing down. He doesn't look explosive when he scrambles on 3rd down. I think it will be a natural transition. At some point I do think his throwing will need a tune up. Ken Dorsey is not going to teach Cam Newton anything.... McNabb, Vick, and McNair all made the transition to pocket QB eventually. The sooner the better in each case.

The goal line runs and fakes are still a very important part of our offense. Ed Dickson wouldn't have been so open on that bootleg if the defense wasn't scared of Cam's running.

What many are doing however, is forgetting that there is an actual rule protecting Cam while he is in the pocket...now the refs haven't been good at enforcing said rule, but it's there.  This year maybe the competition committee, or maybe JR got in Goodell's ear...I have no clue.

At the end of the day, if Cam can embrace the shorter throws, and we can cut down on needing Cam to get rushing 1st downs, we will likely extend his career.

The Lions had 10 men on the LOS on that play. That is why that play worked. Whether they thought it was Cam, Stewy, or CmC, they sold out on the run. And it back fired beautifully.

IMO, this debate comes down to two things. Are you willing to let Cam be Cam? Or do you want to protect him?

Some folks, like me, don't believe this "It can shorten his career if he continues to run." narrative. As long as Cam thinks he can run, and he is successful at it. I say, let him run.

His career can end on an in the pocket hit. Just as readily as a hit on a run. If you are afraid of that. You will limit Cams potential.
