The...South Carolina Panthers?

It's actually not dumb at all.

The location they'd likely be looking at could be highly convenient (not at all far from the junction of 77 and 485) with unused space that could be developed cheaply.

You wouldn't be talking about a super long drive from Charlotte either, so it wouldn't be inconvenient for current ticket holders at all. Mind you, the notion that there are no Panther fans in South Carolina is completely wrong, but we're not talking about something that places an undue burden on existing fans either.

As far as the team, South Carolina has lower taxes, lower standard of living and is overall a cheaper place to be than Charlotte. That's why it's popular to live in places like Fort Mill and Rock Hill while working in Charlotte. The team could save loads of money in operating costs on an annual basis.

There's definitely some logic to it.

Still don't think it happens, but it's not so farfetched as you might think.

I don't think it is something that will be likely for another 20-30 years. I realize that the NYC teams have fled to Jersey for their stadium, however I don't think that Charlotte is going to reach the levels of hyper-inflated prices and costs that NYC sees.

The Charleston Panthers has a nice ring to it.

"Right across the border" makes may think we're not talking about anything all that far away.

Heck, you wouldn't even have to change the name of the team. No rebranding, no need to alter existing merchandise.

Not to mention that would be roughly a tenth the size of the smallest(non-Green Bay) city that the NFL has a team. Would never happen.

Except the lease in Charlotte only goes through next season. That's one of the big reasons people were panicking about the team being sold.

In a case like this, the team reaps financial benefits while technically staying within the same market (which would make the NFL happy).

That's fine but in what world are we talking about South Carolina or Rock Hill being able to finance their portion of a new NFL stadium?

Depends a lot on how they choose to finance it. No word at this point on that.

Given all the economic benefits that come with having an NFL team though, it'd be no shock for the state and communities to make the effort.

You're still technically within the Charlotte area, so you've got Charlotte, Fort Mill, Rock Hill and maybe even other cities factoring into the equation..

And think about it for a second. The Cowboys aren't in Dallas. The 49ers aren't in San Francisco. The Giants and Jets aren't in New York. This wouldn't exactly be unprecedented.

No but it also isn't likely to happen while we have a stadium sitting in downtown Charlotte. Now, if you move 20-30 years from now, I could see it as a possibility. And being within the "Charlotte area" is all fine in theory but it will draw no tax dollars, city or state funds from the major revenue in the city of Charlotte, Mecklenburg Co. or the state of NC.

You are forgetting about all the ticket holders in Winston Salem, Greensboro and Raleigh.  That would add another 45 minutes drive one way.

A twenty year old stadium sitting in Charlotte...

Remember, the team is said to be under new ownership in a year or so. If someone actually does have a plan for a new, state-of-the-art stadium, and they can get financing for it, the new ownership will at the very least listen to what they have to say.

How do you get 45 minutes one way from moving the stadium to a location that's probably only about 20 minutes drive?

I don’t like it. Just can’t see a NFL team anywhere else but Charlotte around here. Seems like the panthers benefit just as much as any by just being in charlotte. The banking capital of the south so to speak. Noob question... why can’t they demolish the current stadium and just rebuild on the current site?
