Wilks to the Giants may be back in play

Couple of side notes...

Titans didn't fire Mularkey, they extended him (yeesh)

Also of note, both Steelers OC Todd Haley and Eagles QB Coach John DeFilppo are out of contract after this season.  They're free to sign anywhere.

If Wilks gets a head coach slot, two great potential OCs are available.

Rotoworld...

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports the Giants' head-coaching job vacancy has been narrowed to Vikings OC Pat Shurmur and Patriots OC Josh McDaniels.

The NFL's worst-kept secret is that McDaniels will be the Colts' next head coach, so this would indicate Shurmur is now the favorite to succeed Ben McAdoo. Shurmur has interviewed with the Giants, Lions, Cardinals, and Bears. Chicago (Matt Nagy) and Detroit (Matt Patricia) have their new coaches in place, while the Cardinals and Giants' searches remain open. Should Shurmur end up choosing Arizona, the G-Men could turn to Panthers DC Steve Wilks.

i'm thinking

mcDaniels to colts for another overrated gamble by a team with an overrated QB

Patricia to the lions for another overrated pats coordinator leading a team that will never go anywhere

shurmur to the cards where he goes after sam bradford and they go nuts in a shaky division until playoff time when the bradford falls apart (seen this cards story too many times for it to not happen).

wilks goes to the giants and turns them into a wildcard team in the playoffs.

This looks pretty close to what I have been reading.

Knowing Gettleman he will try and rape the Panthers and get Washington to come along with Wilks.

However, last thing I saw Wilks wasn't listed as one of the candidates for the Giants.

He might be if they lose out on Shurmur.

If the Giants get Shurmur, Wilks could still get the Cards job.

As to Washington, it's not up to Gettleman what assistants they go after.  The head coach chooses his assistants.

Wilks may indeed want Washington, but the team should be able to block him if they so choose.

I would add no one should necessarily assume that our current slate of assistants is completely safe if Wilks doesn't get a head coaching job.  One of the other head coaching hires could look at them as well (particularly Shurmur, who's an old Rivera colleague).

Wilks has the same grit to him that Tomlin and Bowles have. Both are two great coaches. I think a few teams will regret passing on him, just like I'm sure a few regret passing on McDermott. I don't want Wilks to come back because he's likely gone after next season anyways. We need to go ahead and find his replacement.

Another source on Wilks (quoted from Rotoworld)

ESPN's Jordan Raanan reports Panthers DC Steve Wilks "has the support" of Giants GM Dave Gettleman.

The Giants have reportedly narrowed their list to Vikings OC Pat Shurmur and Patriots OC Josh McDaniels, but McDaniels looks headed to the Colts while Shurmur is also the top candidate in Arizona. If both decide to take other jobs, Wilks would seemingly be the next in line despite not having the head coaching or coordinating experience Giants ownership reportedly covets. What he does have is an ally in Gettleman, who he built a strong relationship with during their time together in Carolina.

And I'm sitting over here still pissed at Gettleman for getting rid of Steve Smith.

we could've had the guy through last season. Who knows how good of an offense they could've developed with 1 -> 89 TDs over and over and over .........

We went to the Super Bowl without him.  The Ravens went nowhere with him.

And Steve Smith wasn't playing last season.

On topic: With the latest news filtering out, Wilks still has a shot with the Cardinals (where he interviewed) and potentially the Titans (where things are just getting started).

The Titans front office includes former Panthers guy Ryan Cowden but GM John Robinson is a Patriots guy.  With Patricia and McDaniels reportedly spoken for, the last Patriot candidate available would be Texans DC Mike Vrabel, whim the Titans have already requested to interview.

MMQB's Albert Breer reports Panthers DC Steve Wilks is still "in the mix" for the Cardinals' head coaching vacancy.

Vikings OC Pat Shurmur was reportedly the favorite in Arizona, but he appears poised to take over the Giants job. That would open the door for Wilks, who Breer reports would bring Eagles QBs coach John DeFilippo with him as offensive coordinator. Wilks will also interview for the Titans, where he presumably will make the same pitch.

The Cardinals are doing second interviews this week.  Sounds like Wilks is going to be one of them.
