Correct but Voth certainly had several prominent sources inside the team as he was the one who broke the Smith being cut story.

Newton I'm sure had inside sources as well at the time.

Everyone has supposed anonymous inside sources. Problem is anonymity doesn't create responsibility. Usually just the opposite.

Voth only wrote this recently. I read it. So did others, but attempts to find it since then have come up short.

Newton confirmed it just today.

Confirmed the rumor or named sources. Very different. Again if this story made sense it might be true but it makes little sense if you take off the tin hat.

If Tina Becker matured in an organization run by Jerry Richardson, respected him, and was promoted by him to run the team in his absence, it makes sense to me that she would also not speak to the media very often.

Fair point.

I don't really think anybody in the organization wants her in front of a camera and a microphone though. At least that's what I've heard from some folks that used to work there.

There never was a rumor about this.

There was a theory that Richardson never really wanted to fire Hurney, but nothing in that theory suggested the possibility of Richardson wanting to fire Rivera or Hurney requesting to be fired. Those details only came to light after they were posted, first by Voth and now by Newton.

This isn't a tinfoil hat situation. Nobody made this up. Nobody had any idea about it until it was printed online a few weeks back, and again now.

Richardson? Partly his word to Hurney, but more importantly the fact that we started winning.

Gettleman? He liked Rivera. Gettleman firmly believed they could win a Super Bowl together, and said so to Ron.

So if Hurney was right about Rivera and if Gettleman agreed and Hurney convinced Richardson to keep him then why did anyone have to fall on the sword. And why would Richardson trust Hurney's opinion about Rivera and then fire Hurney. Do you even see how convoluted that logic is.

I think both things are probably true. She doesn't want to speak and they don't want her to speak. And since she's not long for the position, should we really want her to speak? All she can really do is muddy up the waters.

Then why was the question raised if he was fired or resigned at the time. Given the word was he was fired, there must have been something said somewhere if this conspiracy theory is to be believed. And again until confirmed this is still a rumor that has not been proven. I wonder if Voth wants to confirm or deny it now that he works for the Panthers. If he confirms it I believe it. Otherwise get out the tin hat... Might be a good question for Grill Bill's next column.

It's not convoluted at all. You're trying to make it that way in an effort to muddy the waters, but it really isn't.

- We were losing (1-5 if I remember right)

- Because we were losing, Richardson wanted to fire Rivera

- Because he didn't want to see Rivera get fired, but realizing that somebody needed to be held publicly accountable, Hurney volunteered to take the axe instead

- Richardson didn't really want to let Marty go, but ultimately agreed to his request

Nothing whatsoever convoluted about that. It's simple, believable and very easy to understand.

It wasn't asked because there was no need.

When a team comes out and says that a icoach or a GM was fired, nobody asks if they really resigned.

You're making some pretty big reaches here trying to discredit this.

Quite possible.

Besides, you've got Hurney who's a PR guy and perfectly willing to talk to the media.
