Patriots | Some clarification on Malcolm Butler
Mon, 05 Feb 2018 16:03:10 -0800

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots impending free-agent CB Malcolm Butler was benched for the Super Bowl due to several reasons, including showing up a day later than teammates because he was sick and struggling in practices. Head coach Bill Belichick has been vague as to the specific reasoning behind Butler's benching.

Nelson Agholor and other Eagles were sick this week too.  The Eagles didbn't punish them for it.

It's one thing to be benched in terms of starting the game for "team violations".  This fool Belichick kept a solid piece of his defense out of the entire game.  Butler didn't even play in nickel and dime packages.  If I'm a Patriots player, I would be furious.  We are talking about grown men here being treated like children.  If he's late to a meeting, fine him.  If he misses curfew, fine him.  If it becomes a perpetual thing, release him.  Don't treat a grown man like a child or a college kid.  If it were Tom Brady missing curfew, do you think Belichick keeps him out of that game?  This is the ish people get fired over in my opinion.  This is head rolling stuff!

Belichick is the most successful HC of our lifetimes, he is not about to be fired over this.

Trust me, pay me millions a year to play a game and I'll be in bed by curfew prior to one of the biggest games of my life, no matter how silly I personally think it is.  Why? Because I'm not about to take any chances of possibly screwing up one of the biggest moments of my life.  Especially if my HC is Belichick, who is a known quantity, even to the casual fan.

Butler has no one to blame but himself if he ended up in Belichick's dog house for doing something easily preventable.  It appears he may have put himself before the team and let down his teammates in the process.

Yet again, if Brady was late to a curfew, does he miss the game?

There is no way for me to get into Belichick's head to tell you.

What we do know is Butler is no Brady and it appears he might have let himself and his teammates down doing something selfish.

I actually think Belichick is the one that let the team down yesterday.  He let his pride get in the way because of personal reasons.  If a guy violates team rules constantly, get rid of him.  Yeah Butler is no Brady, but it certainly appears Butler would have been a key piece in the game yesterday.  Just like he played a key role in securing the super bowl versus the Seahawks.  He's not superstar or hall of famer, but he was a solid piece in the Patriots defense.  If Belichick would have sat Brady down if Brady missed curfew, everybody would be so up his behind.  As it turned out, the team needed Butler as much as they needed Brady, when it came to winning that game yesterday.

Agreed Nanuq, you make a compelling argument. If you don't enforce the rules, then there's no point in having rules. He forced the coach's hand doing that. No, Brady wouldn'tve gotten benched, neither would Gronk have, but if he wants their treatment then he needs to play better. If you want to break the rules, you bring it at one of the highest levels sunday, otherwise, you get benched.

Much of Patriots success is due to Brady's dedication to his craft.

Convince me Tom has busted curfew and I'll continue down this road with you.

I believe the game is way too important to Brady to even contemplate taking such foolish risks.

Agreed.

Now Gronk, on the other hand...

The point I'm making is if it were Brady, he doesn't sit.  Yet when it comes to Butler, do you really keep a guy out because he missed curfew?  That's treating a grown man like this is college level stuff.  Like I said, if this was a perpetual thing with Butler, he should have been gone a long time ago.  You don't pull some high school/college level discipline on a man.  The joke is on Belichick.
