Panthers Converted OT Matt Kalil's $10M Option Bonus Into A Signing Bonus Guaranteeing He'll Be On Roster In 2018

So this should provide cap savings given the option bonus isn't prorated but signing bonuses are so his cap hit will go down which is the whole point of why it was converted.

You responded to a tweet that says "this doesn't create any cap savings" by saying "this should provide cap savings"?

Why would Panthers make this move if it didn’t help CAP wise,  if he was going to be on the roster regardless?

Maybe it’s freeing up cap space in the future  for a new long term contract for someone else?

Kalil is 90% off the books after this season?

Yep because I think that is wrong. If it doesn't create cap savings you don't convert it to a signing bonus you simply exercise the option. Either way he gets paid.

Some of us don't believe everything we see in a tweet.

Unless it pushes someone’s propaganda

I THINK by doing this then it would allow us to cut bait with him in 2019 and lower the cap penalty if we did so. So while there are no short term savings, it puts us in a position to cut him more easily if he sucks or he's injured, etc.

*edit*

Apparently I am wrong and this is not the case. In fact, it may mean the exact opposite.

Why would we do that unless you are freeing up space for a New  Core player contract?

So in 2019 the only paid player on the OL would be Trai Turner busting this myth that OL has 2 much investment and can't extend Norwell.

I realize you believe your opinion is more valuable than that of the people that cover the team, but I'm going to take their word for it.

Spotrac noted that we could exercise the option by March or it automatically converts to salary which becomes full guaranteed so then 11 million will be fully guaranteed for 2018.  Exercising and converting it to a signing bonus should move a significant amount of that 10 million to the future which absolutely cuts his cap hit for 2018.

It's a future move for 2019 if need be.

    • I believe you are correct. Everyone remembers that record setting drubbing of the Broncos but that was the highlight of their season. They have very good coaching overall and they have a ton of talent. With a better QB they could have knocked off the Chiefs IMO. We aren't even in the conversation of the Dolphins until proven otherwise. We couldn't even get in the end zone against the lowly Chicago Bears. We got shutout and blown out by the CJ Beathard led Jaguars for fugs sake. We can't even compete with bad teams let alone run up the score on them. To me if I'm being completely realistic if I'm the GM and my job is on the line and I feel like Tua is Bryce Young's ceiling I'm drafting QB in the first round next year unless he just magically has a season like Stroud did last year. That's it. I'm genuinely not trying to be abrasive about this it just gets really mind numbing eventually that we keep lowering the bar down down down down down and it's like hey it's fine to have expectations. And if you have a young QB in his prime and he isn't giving you at least prime Jake Delhomme arm talent it's time to keep looking for a QB.
    • Not exactly.  They show that Jones was making the most of the opportunities he had.  I was never a fan of his, but I think that the talent level in NE last year is somehow escaping the massive negative attention it should have received.  That team was terrible - especially the talent and coaching on offense - and everyone was still afraid of the wrath of hoodie. He'll have a chance to restart his career at some point.  He was a middle of the pack QB as a rookie.  Plenty of teams out there would love to make it up to middle of the pack at QB.
    • Didn't he not beat a winning team all season while putting up pro-bowl numbers?  Faster, better arm, bigger....still a weak point for his playoff team with all of that talent around him. People are so twisted up in the Panther fan base that they can't tell how ungrounded they are at this point.
