If we play the falcons, and they have all 54 players active and healthy enough to play, and we only have 48 healthy enough to play, then that is a competitive advantage for them.  Yeah, we could call players up from the practice squad, but that basically turns the practice squad into the inactive plays group.

Thanks.

It still doesn't make any sense. You could activate a player from your practice squad if it was a short-term injury or you could possibly go out and sign a guy at that position off the couch if it was a longer term injury and you didn't have a guy at that position on the PS. It's not like a team is likely to ever go into game day with fewer active players than their opponent.

Is there still a 53-man roster limit in your scenario?? How do you make room for all these players you’re activating from your practice squad or signing off the street for temporary injuries? You’re either going to have to prematurely IR players with short-term injuries or have to cut healthy players at other positions or demote active roster players to the practice squad and risk losing them to other teams, etc.

You can’t just bump players from the practice squad or sign people off the street without some corresponding move from your active roster to maintain the 53-player limit.  Having all 53 players active every week would be crippling for teams dealing with these week-to-week injuries like us with Ryan Kalil this past season or in the past with Kuechly in the concussion protocol.

The reason for the inactive list is to give a team a place to put injured players who aren't on IR.  Its suppose to create a competitive balance so that one team doesn't have more healthy players than another.  Or at least help in that regard.  For example, if we have two injured players, and our opponent has none, then we would be at a competitive disadvantage without the inactive list.  But having each team with 7 inactives is supposed to help even it out.  Doesn't always work out that way.

Dont see it happening for the same reason they implemented it. You all do realize that if we go to a full 53 that it will lead to more players being cut and less job security. If you're Joe schmoe and get a injury that takes 2-3 weeks to heal, you'll be out of a job immediately. No team is going to wait for you to heal if your name isn't a Kuechly or Newton.
