Steve Smith bullied Cam Newton his rookie season?

nah, sucker punching people isn't designed to test them.  sucker punching people is what you do when you're not sure if you could actually beat someone up, and mostly its to make sure you don't get embarrassed by being beat up.  sucker punching someone would be embarrassing to most of us, but not steve.   he was so afraid of being perceived as a wuss or failure that attacking unaware teammates was ok with him.  that's what made him great, fear, being terrified of failure, and being willing to go to any lengths to protect his self image.   imagine his personal fragility.  imagine being so terrified of other peoples perception you cant even take a joke.   thats steve.   youve known people like him.  they suck as people even if they're driven to greatness by their fear.

I'm not saying they should but I feel like most fans only care about the performance on the field, the spectacle. All the other stuff falls into the same realm as politics for these people, they don't care or want to even think about it.

say it louder for the cheeto-dusted no.89 jersey-wearing neckbeards in the back

I'll have you know I now try to keep my beard line from dipping down too far into my neck region!

I'll never give up my Cheetos or my Smitty jersey, even though it is one of the crappy painted on numbers one and the numbers have worn damn near off!

Look, I know Smitty is probably one of the main things we disagree on, you and I.

I don't want to sound like I'm defending the actions of the twenty something hot head that lots of people seem to remember him as. Because, really, I'm not. There is no excuse for that kind of thing, especially against your own teammates.

But, how may here were cheering things such as "Ice Up Son" or when Smith straight went after the Saints in the end zone after they were being dirty with him and rookie Cam back in 2011? Why is his aggression treated differently when it is against someone on another team and not one of our own or one of our fans?

Not many people spoke up about these things when he was here. But as soon as the door closes, the talk begins. It is cowardice in a way, and in a way it mirrors how the Panthers org treated it.

Smith had a right to be bitter with the way his situation was handled. He gave us all more than that and then some in his time here. Sure, there were bad moments. I know it is apples to oranges talent wise, but IIRC Kerry Collins was allowed to go to another team and succeed without all the hatred. He was probably a worse SOB than Smitty at times, but nobody ever talks about that. Pep even suffered the same vitriol that Smith gets when he left. "He's lazy. He doesn't try. He's not a leader. He's a bad teammate."

Again, I don't know that I've ever had legit hate for a former Panther outside of Carruth.

If you or anyone else wants to hate Smith, then that's cool. Go for it. But, in the end, it doesn't really hurt him or his legacy at all. He's paid the cost to be the boss. He's had consequences for his actions. Some that believe in karma could attribute Smitty's injuries, or being stuck with Jake Delhomme, Rodney Peete, and Jimmy Clausen for most of his career as the universe's way of achieving balance.

But you know what?  Steve Smith got back up every time and kicked karma in the teeth and went to work. That is why I admire his achievements with the Panthers and among WRs in NFL history.

people change over time. maybe smitty never changed but one thing is that i did (it just happens between registering on the forum when you’re 16 to being 28 today). yea i was a huge smith fan and obviously his play on the field can’t not be inspiring. i mean it’s the reason i let so many things in my mind slide over the years. by the time it got to the point where he was shooting arrows at every personnel manager and former teammate of his, i had gotten tired of it.

as great as smitty was, imagine how great he could’ve been if he had just been a more constructive teammate, and not just a really gifted football player who was seeking easy targets to establish himself on top of the pecking order in the locker room. it really looked to be the case by 2013 that he was playing more for himself than anything else. the way he embarrassed janoris jenkins and aqib talib, that’s something we needed him to be doing every week. but not every opposing corner is going to try to jab his ego. smith barely made any kind of impact in most of those other games that year.

and no, i’m not a believer in karma lol. karma is neo hippy self affirmation bullshit for dumb girls who repost rh sin screenshots on instagram when they get faded on by some hookup they were rly into for like the 18th time. but if social media and the current state of the court of public opinion has taught us anything, it’s that anybody can have a reputation no matter how good it is ripped out from under them. nobody is too big to fall down to rock bottom as a pariah. definitely not smitty. if an influential group of ppl soured on him, he’d be ruined.

I can enjoy Smitty's amazing career as a football player and still acknowledge that he's an asshole of a human being. The two aren't mutually exclusive. What's hilarious are the posters that somehow believe that his amazing career somehow justifies/excuses him being an asshole of a human being. It's like some of you have to believe that everything you like is right and good, LOL.

I'm not trying to wax philosophic or reflect on my own more misanthropic times, but you can't tell me that you don't get at least a little joy out of seeing someone who's dealt harm to you or someone you care for somehow getting the same in return.

Case in point, if Smitty would have been held to two catches for twelve yards in the "bring your goggles" bowl, you'd probably have been all like "HAHAHA you bastard! That's what you get!"

But that day karma favored the 5 foot 9 and a half one time Atlas-esque castoff. Therefore, I reveled in the misery of my fellow fans as he crushed his enemy, saw them driven before him, and heard the lamentations of their women.

That's probably the only time I can ever remember pulling for someone on the other side of the sidelines from the Panthers during a game.

We can agree to disagree. It doesn't mean I don't love any of you any less.

heyyyyyy confucius, that’s not the kind of karma we’re talking about in this context.

idk. for me it runs deeper than that. what is smith as a raven other than a jilted former player that is threatening the team i want to win? if he was a threat then of course i would’ve been happy to see him stifled.

what i don’t like about karma (the new age hippie version of it; not the original writings moo daeng thought i was talking about) is that in this western world, it’s really just-world fallacy gussied up into looking like something spiritual. it has this inintended consequence of these so called morally balanced individuals assuming that if life is good for you, that you somehow did something heroic, noble, admirable, whatever, to deserve that (lol), and if you have been hitting it rough, that you somehow did something to deserve that as well. i dunno exactly why it’s so appealing to ppl my age if they want to think of themselves as good ppl, bc most of the ones i know that love talking about karma are absolutely self righteous turds, and of course, they are so mired in their own social hangups that it’s all they talk about. it’s true irony to see how much they want to talk about how one should go about their lives and police their own actions when they’re obviously ego driven.

this is getting a little deep for a discussion about steve smith, but in my experience as a fan of the panthers having to listen to how many of the tangents and stunts he pulled over the years, railing against former teammates, railing against the organization, i couldn’t care less about his accolades. this isn’t to say he’s talentless or deny any of his accomplishments, but i’d rather have a superbowl trophy for the panthers than a triple crown WR. and how many teams won the superbowl without steve smith on their roster besides all the superbowl winning teams?

extra pie for using the "couldn't care less" saying correctly rather than the Huddle typical "could care less"

yeah, gettleman fuged smitty.  you don't bring in the guy who cheapshotted him (roman harper) and make sure they cross paths on smitty's way out of the building unless youre sending the 'good riddance' message.  but smitty was fuging with the franchise qb.     like he actually thought he was more important than cam.  what a fuging idiot.  that's how jack russels are.   gettleman and smitty seem to have the same type personality, which can best be summed up by, 'i wanna wag my dick at other dudes.'  i never got that.   i get wagging it at a buddy in fun after some kinda competition, but not seriously.  ended up being a detriment to the team.  both of em.
