Well done. I think Mahon still makes it due to Hurney’s man crush on him.

Agreed, but man-crush aside, he has performed well. If Van Roten hadn't stepped up in a big way, we'd likely be seeing Mohan running with the 1's.  As KBfan pointed out, there's a good chance he doesn't clear waivers. He's definitely raw, but his upside is immense. I'd be fine keeping him and cutting Silalotu, especially if Amini's injury is going to make him miss more than a couple of weeks. If we need him, he'll be on his couch waiting.

The backup QB battle intrigues me. I never gave Heinicke a shot based on what I saw in training camp, but he's been impressive in games -- largely due to his penchant for extending the play. He's got wheels. I don't think he has the arm befitting a guy we'd need to lean on if Cam got hurt, though. I have Randy Fasani concerns there.

Gilbert has a great arm and throws damn darts. He's had a good preseason and was dropped to third through no real fault of his own. I think the coaches want someone whose mobility is more akin to Cam than DA and that sort of hurt Gilbert's case from the start. He's got the arm but not the wheels.

Heinicke has looked pretty accurate on the short to medium throws, and has been going through his progressions well. This may be due to him being familiar with Norv, but I think he has definitely outperformed Gilbert so far. At first, I thought he was a camp body to help teach Norv's gameplan, BUT, If he can keep extending plays long enough for the receivers to get open, he could be a career QB 2 for years to come.

lol CAP is gonna be the #2 RB BTW panthers are keeping 4 RBs, 4 TEs & 6 WRs

OK, let's play this out...Are you counting Armah as 1 of your 4 RB's or TE's, or is FB a separate roster spot? Can you please elaborate on who gets cut to make room for 4 RB's and 4 TE's? I'm asking in all seriousness, you've got to have some unexpected cuts on your roster.

What's very interesting is that there are probably 6 or more teams hurting for OL depth - especially tackle depth. That does make the decision who to cut or expose to waivers particularly tricky.

So much depends on the medical prognosis / timeframe for Matt, Amini and Sirles, all of whom can play tackle (at least in theory). If there is any question whether at least one of them will be 100% vs Dallas, we have to keep guys like Clausell and maybe another backup tackle (Bisnowaty?) whom we otherwise might have put on PS.

Mahon as a Guard might clear waivers with less difficulty than I've talked about. But if he plays well on Thursday he could catch a team's eye...

I do still think Amini would be safe on his couch, but I doubt our FO/coaches will take that risk given how virtually non-existent our depth is now.

One HUGE positive in all of this though is that we've discovered that our depth was much stronger than we ever expected.

Moton, and Van Roten look like they should be starting.

Sirles looks like a very valuable depth piece, as is Larsen (as we already knew)

Clausell and Mahon look quite promising...

Funny, it may not have been our Oline depth that was the problem, but our "starters" (Matt and Amini).  Kalil's contract is the one glaring problem / weakness as I evaluate the OL going forward. It limits flexibility and may keep us from starting our best guys.
