Pretty amazing considering pretty much everyone here was worried about the o-line during training camp and then starters are dropping like flies... amazing job by Matsko to get the line working this good

Serious question:

Is there any kind of recognition for position coaches in the league?  If so, I'd say Matsko should be in the running for O line coach honors based on the past 3 weeks.  Of course it's early, but wow, pretty impressive to lose 4 prior year starters (all but Ryan Kalil) and put up the kind of numbers we put up on Sunday.

And losing four - Williams, Turner, Amini (lol), & M. Kalil (lol) - from injuries throughout preseason and first few weeks. Much harder when you are not able to adequately strategize around foreseen departures such as offseason moves. God damn impressive, Matsko and backups!

I think he woulda ran well last year with more carries.he was behind stewart and it’s hard to get into a rythm with only 7 carries per game.

Our oline was garbage and Shula has no idea that the design of run blocking is a part of your job too as an OC, it didn't matter

Yes, it's very frustrating not to be able to access the data for the number of carries in each direction.  I don't subscribe to any premium PFF data, so I'm not sure how to find that data easily.  Maybe Sharp Football has it....?  So, yes, I think it's best to treat this as interesting but perhaps not significant on a small sample size.

So I don't know if PFF classifies runs the same way, but I looked at the play-by-play for the CIN game on Pro Football Reference. Here's an example of what I found:

1 6:10 2 10 CAR 36 Christian McCaffrey left tackle for 13 yards (tackle by Jordan Evans)

This is the run that refers to:

mac-2.gif?w=412&h=224

This play does start going outside to the left with the center and left tackle pulling, but by the time McCaffrey crosses the line of scrimmage, he's to the right of the right guard. In the end, the left tackle's block is basically irrelevant on this play. So even as the season progresses and sample size start getting larger, the interpretation of the numbers is not so clear. The simple interpretation of numbers like these that you tend to see in the media is that if runs to one side are gaining a lot of yards then that side of the line must be blocking well, and you could make a case for that if you sorted runs by where the runner actually turned upfield. But if runs are sorted the way this one is, the picture is more complicated.

Hey, if those plays worked for the 67 Packers there's no reason they shouldn't have worked last season.

A detailed write up of CMCs targets and touches. While it's written from a fantasy perspective, it has a bunch of interesting info.

For instance I didn't realize CMCs 28 carries / 184 yards are season bests among RBs so far. Was wondering that, but hadn't had time to look.

Oops, that image belongs in the comment above... I'm too tired to fix it. Sorry...

Only one tackle for loss is amazing after the last 6 years under Shula.

Best thing is about CMC this season is the insane difference in yards per carry compared to the first quarter of last season, 5.9 this season , and  he mightve been sub 3.0 ypc by the 3rd game of last season (remembering his outing vs the Bills was particularly bad) . Of course though, worse oline and Shula weren't helping him.

    • I was playing around with the ESPN playoff predictor and it shows if 49ers and Rams finish with same record, the Rams hold the tiebreaker.
    • This is my thinking as well. Seattle played as good as they could on defense and Panthers still had a chance until those back to back turnovers.  I don't think the Rams played particularly well in their game against us, alot things went our way in order to win.  Someone pointed out the Rams were bad on the east coast road games and Seattle has been the better road team but they just fought a hard contested game against the Panthers, and now they travel to San Fran this week for their biggest game of the season to determine the division and if they are the overall #1 seed in the NFC or will be traveling for the Wildcard weekend.  If they lose they then travel back cross the country to play a team they've just beaten two weeks ago, not saying they won't be favored against the Panthers but the energy of hosting our first playoff game in 10 years along with the get back effect of having just lost to this team could be huge.
    • I don’t know about shadowing and all that, but according to this, whatever we are doing is working
