Who on our defense would work in a 3-4?

How good is Addison's pass coverage?

You can't always send the same 7 unless you are bringing both of them.

He's a question mark.

Addison has the build sand speed to play OLB in a 3-4, youre right the question is can he do it.  I think Addison could come up on line for nickle packages

The reason it's hard to understand is most DCs don't run a 3-4.

Plus we would need at least 3 new starting linebackers.

Obada gone, probably addison, Horton gone, you need tweener 3 techniques and teach them how to play that modified 5 technique.

Haynes is the only guy we have to play 7 technique so we need another starter for the other side plus backups at all those positions.

Not sure Luke would do well at Sam when he's been a Mike his whole life and the keys and fits are different.

Essentially you would have to probably add 12 new guys to the front 7.

That makes zero sense. You run your system to fit your players not the other way around.

Only if we were a terrible team would you completely reinstall a defense.

12 new guys.  Got it.  Thank you for your opinion on the question in the op.  Why did it take so long to get to it?

The GM doesn't pick the philosophy of the defense. The HC and DC pick it.

Secondly they didn't start the 3-4 till cowher. It was a complete rebuild of the entire team. He had DL the godfather of 3-4 to install it.

Tomlin kept it because they already had a winning program so to blow it up to run 4-3 would have been stupid.

How it works is the Owner has a vision and philosophy he wants for the team (ex. JR wanted hard-nosed, defensive focused teams).  The owner hires a GM that will build the team with that philosophy in mind.  Then the GM will hire a coach whose philosophy aligns with the owners basic philosophy.  So, while you are technically correct that the coaches determine what philosophy they will employ, they really are only employing what those above them have identified as the identity of the team.  So, if the GM believes in the 3-4, he will hire a coach that will run that defense.

Cowher was hired in 1992.  That has been 26 years of a 3-4 defensive philosophy, so it has been ingrained into the team makeup and identity of the entire organization.  By this time, most, if not all of the key personnel have spent their entire time with the team in the 3-4.  So, it is logical that it is the defensive scheme they are most comfortable with since it is the only one they have employed during their time with the Steelers.  Therefore, it is a logical question to wonder if we have the personnel to run that defense.

It's not unusual for OLB's in a 3-4 to be primarily pass rushers.  Heck, I remember a talking head discussing how they had never seen DeMarcus Ware cover anybody.  While that was likely a bit of hyperbole, it exemplifies the point that in a 3-4, the primary pass rusher focuses on rushing the QB.  With that said, I do think Addison would be fine when asked to drop back in coverage.  And I see him as a short term placeholder anyway as we build the 3-4.  But he's already on the wrong side of 30, so I see him as a placeholder regardless of whatever scheme we employ.

And, a good 3-4 coach will draw up schemes that will confuse the offense and keep them guessing not only who is coming, but where they are coming from.  In some ways, it's similar to the 4-3 in that you usually have at least 4 pass rushers, but rather than having 4 base linemen lined up in the traditional spots, you have the 3 down linemen, and a LB standing up that can come from anywhere.

everyone. but whats also weird as fug is that you can have a hybrid defense. you're allowed to go 4-3 and 3-4 and quarter and wide nickel or whatever. just putting the effort and doing something NEW and adapting but the panthers don't adapt as fast as other teams.

the best NFL teams in the future will be able to flow to any formation.

This is what Ron promised us when he was hired, we just never actually saw it.

    • In your opinion. What do you think Moton's true value in contract, dollars and guarantees? If we had not extended him, what is your plan for RT in 27 and 28? How important are good offensive linemen for our current offense? How much value do you put on protecting Bryce at this stage of his career? How difficult in general do you think finding above average tackles in the NFL is?
    • The Falcons have 2 significant offensive line injuries to start the 2025 season. Right tackle Kaleb Mcgary (who is the blindside protector for Penix since he is left-handed) is going to miss significant time, and it's looking more like it may be all season. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/falcons-expect-kaleb-mcgary-to-miss-significant-time https://x.com/BKsquared7/status/1959285822236107013. Also, the top backup and swing tackle, Storm Norton (cool name BTW) is having ankle surgery and may miss half the season. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/falcons-ot-storm-norton-out-6-8-weeks-after-ankle-surgery I don't root for injuries, but its also hard to be too sympathetic given how badly injuries have hit us in recent years. We definitely need to get that W in week 3 for our home opener at BOA. Despite our collective frustration at not being able to attend TC and then having boring preseason games, ultimately the most important objective of the preseason is to enter Week1 healthy, and we have at least done that. Hopefully the depth we think we have at Oline either shines through or isn't needed. Many other teams are in a bad spot with their offensive lines before the season even starts. For once, we aren't in that situation.
    • That roster was billed as a super smart and strong unit for a young QB….until he sucked though.   it didn’t have superstars but it had proven vets that checked well all the safe boxes and it was universally agreed the Panthers were putting him into position to succeed. BY just doesn’t fit a traditional O because he isn’t built like a traditional QB.  And he still doesn’t.   CJ Stroud would have had more success here than Bryce with that cast.   CJ just has the tools that fit the NFL more easily.  Young can find success but I have always argued it would take a Bryce centric plan (which we have never attempted IMO)
